Virginia City wild weekends ahead feature Labor Day celebration, camel and ostrich races

Virginia City celebrates the next two weekends with historic proportions including the Great Civil War Days this Saturday through Monday, the annual Labor Day parade and then prepares itself with giddy and up go the following weekend with the 57th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races.

Carson City Toyota helping WNC students succeed through scholarships

Carson City Toyota is funding several new scholarships for local students who attend Western Nevada College. The students come from Carson City, Dayton, Douglas and Silver Stage high schools.

Carson Toyata General Manager Dana Whaley presented a $4,000 check to WNC President Chet Burton this week. The scholarships were created to help eight college students meet financial needs, as they work toward a degree from WNC.

John Doiron, Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education’s new manufacturing instructor, stood in front of the Carson City Area Manufacturers Forum in early June to outline his plan for the manufacturing program and to ask for their support in sharing their knowledge to develop curriculum, being guest speakers in class and inviting students in to their facilities for field trips, internships and other work-based learning experiences.

Senator Square: Carson High School prepares for 2016 graduation

Graduation for the class of 2016 is Saturday, June 4, and the ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the Carson High School football field in Carson City.

One last photo opportunity will happen the morning of graduation. This is the photo of everyone together wearing caps and gowns. The 2016 senior class photo will be taken in the gym, so all seniors must arrive at the school, and meet in the gym by 8:45 a.m.

Western Nevada College graduates record number

Western Nevada College graduated its largest class ever Monday. A record 556 students earned a total of 598 degrees and certificates.

In a first, 27 graduates are high school students who participated in WNC’s Jump Start College program. These students are to receive their associate degrees prior to receiving their high school diplomas.

Sunshine and bright faces moved like a breeze through Carson City’s safest street early Saturday at the 13th annual all-ages Cops and Kids event hosted by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

The block party brought children, their parents and grandparents, families and friends for a morning and mid afternoon of refreshments, music, safety demonstrations and games.

The 13th annual Cops and Kids is an all-out community gathering where parents and children can participate in games and activities all designed with family, health and safety in mind. The street party spans two blocks and features refreshments, music, safety demonstrations, games and more. It regularly sees at least a thousand or more children in attendance.

Senator Square: Scott Vickrey named Carson High School's Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Scott Vickrey, the 2016 CHS Teacher of the Year, and Tami Burgoon, the CHS Classified Employee of the Year for 2016. Becoming Teacher of the Year is no easy task at Carson High School. With 104 teachers, not including other staff members, the CHS Teacher of the Year Award is an accomplishment most teachers will never receive, so winning an award like this required a great many people to say a great thing or two about Scott Vickrey.

California rubber company to move plastics division to Carson Valley

A rubber and plastic manufacturer will move its plastic division from California to Carson Valley in Douglas County and bring 40 jobs along with it, officials with Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Thursday.

VIP Rubber and Plastic has purchased a building near Johnson Lane and plans a Jan. 4, 2016 opening. The company's main manufacturing facility will remain in La Habra, Calif.

Embracing the area's design and manufacturing community, the Capital City Arts Initiative's [CCAI] exhibition, Industrial Art, is now at the Carson City Library. The show, previously at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, will be available at the Library through November 19.

The Library will host a public reception for Industrial Art on Friday, October 2, 3:30-5pm in honor of Manufacturer's Month [October]. The Library’s MT1 training room and the Digitorium will also feature students’ manufacturing activities during the open house event.

Silver Oak golf course owner provides multiple gifts to Western Nevada College Foundation

What looks like an auto part collector's dream will eventually take shape into at least one, and as many as three vintage Ford Model A closed cab pick-up trucks and a 1931 Ford slant window sedan.

Donated to the Western Nevada College Foundation on behalf of the E.L. Cord Automotive Technology Center by Garth Richards, owner of the Silver Oak Golf Course located near the college in Carson City, the combined parts have an appraised value of $15,000.

Player sign-ups underway for Western Nevada College Golf Classic

More than 150 golfers are expected to compete in the 16th annual Western Nevada College Golf Classic to be held Friday, Sept. 18 at Silver Oak Course. Signups are now underway.

Proceeds from the annual tournament hosted by the Western Nevada College Foundation benefit College programs, help students achieve their academic goals and give back to the community as a skilled, educated workforce.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Man jailed after attempting to sell stolen car to dealership

A 63-year-old Reno man was arrested Friday on felony charges including possession of a stolen car after he allegedly attempted to sell the car at a Carson City automotive lot, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Donald Brown Kimball was booked on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, uttering a forged instrument and possession of a controlled substance, all felonies. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
