Friends and acquaintances of Tony Pastini described him as a generous member of the community, a long-time supporter of local youth programs. He was a friendly face to his neighbors.

"Winterflix," a play on the popular Netflix streaming service, was the theme this year at the 2019 Winterfest week at CHS with dress-up days and night-time activities all week long. Some of the events included the Netflix show, "Stranger Things," a Twins Day, "Riverdale," "The Office," and even the ever popular once-a-month Dress for Success competition.

Well, Carson City, here we are at the end of another work week. And if you love to play in the snow on weekends, then there's good news on its way.

A chance for more white stuff is in the forecast for our area starting later Friday afternoon through Sunday.

The Carson City School District is reminding parents, guardians and caregivers that this Thursday's #SAVETHEKIDS presentation, featuring keynote speaker Collin Kartchner and educational consultant Katey McPherson, is for adults only; no children or students.

That event takes place at 7 p.m. inside the Carson Middle School Cafeteria.

NOTE: Thursday, Feb. 7 is parents only night. The Friday assemblies are for students only.

Cell phones and social media are connecting us and impacting our lives in so many ways. Among all the positives, studies are now showing some damaging affects these social media and screen-time may have on the mental and physical health of children.

On Monday, the 80th session of the Nevada State Legislature began with a welcoming snowfall, which is expected to continue until Tuesday morning.

This session marks the first time in U.S. history that state has elected a female-majority legislature after Rochelle Thuy Nguyen and Beatrice Angela Duran were appointed to two open seats in Las Vegas, bringing the total seats held by women to 33 out of 63.

CHS hosted the Northern Nevada Forensic League tournament last weekend.

According to CHS teacher and Speech and Debate Adviser Patrick Mobley, “We would like to thank all the judges and coaches who volunteered their time to help this tournament become a success.”

No high school on the planet has as many events regularly happening as that of Carson High School, and one of the biggest of the year, Winterfest, begins Feb. 1. This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls is a youth service organization for girls between the ages of 11– 20, established in 1922 and we are hosting a Valentine's painting party for the community to attend, suggested age 5 and up. We will be at the Carson Lodge, 113 Washington St., Carson City on Feb. 16.

People, even Nevadans themselves, often ask why Carson City is our beloved capital. It does seem odd, when you look at the “City,” half rural, half town. Reno has more than double our population, and Las Vegas even more. During the Comstock Boom, Virginia City was arguably the largest, most profitable city in the state.

So how did little Carson City become the central legislative hub of Nevada?

This is also the last weekend before Christmas Day, which means the last Santa Trains of the season at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Santa Claus also leaves his North Pole headquarters at the Carson Mall Sunday in preparation for his big night.

Rainbow Girls Carson Assembly No. 7 is partnering with the Carson Mall once again to provide gift wrapping to holiday shoppers as its 40th annual fundraiser.

Christmas is getting closer, and in Carson City, that means holiday trains. From the V&T Railway's Polar Express to the Nevada State Railroad Museum's Santa Train, rails around the state capital are busy delivering Saint Nicholas to children and spreading Christmas cheer.

Worldwide the United States is regarded as the land of opportunity. That is generally true for millions of Americans, but it may not be true much longer i the Battle Born state when it comes to education.

A group of nine Assembly members and five state senators have formed a new caucus focused on economic development through the lens of technology and businesses that bring tech jobs to Nevada.

Students and educators at Carson City’s Empire Elementary School were treated once more to inspirational coaching sessions in the art of storytelling and writing throughout the entire week. Children’s Author Gary Hogg will visit all classrooms K-5 to model a 45-minute writing lesson for teachers and students alike.

On November 20 at Yerington High School, Native Youth Community Project (NYCP) staff - Gerald Hunter and Mary Williams - arranged for five different cultural groups to present and dance for Yerington High and Intermediate Schools. Some of the dances included the Opening Flag Song, Victory Song, Great Basin Dancers, Powwow dancers, Aztec Dancers and California Maidu/Miwok Dancers. The assembly was in honor of Native American Heritage Month. There were explanations of the dances as well as a question and answer period. Students and staff were able to participate in a couple of the dances.
