Nevada is now the first state in U.S. history to have a Female-Majority Legislature
In a historic move, Nevada is now the first and only state to ever have a female majority state legislation after Rochelle Thuy Nguyen (D) and Beatrice Angela Duran (D) were appointed to two open seats in Las Vegas.
These two appointments bring the total seats held by women to 33 out of a total of 63 seats in the Legislature.
According to an article by PBS, “Women will hold nine of 21 seats in the state Senate, falling short of a majority in that chamber. But they will hold 24 of 42 seats in the Assembly, comprising 57 percent in that chamber and giving women enough numbers to make the two chambers an overall female majority.”
No state has even had a 50 percent-female Legislature, although the New Hampshire State Senate held a female majority in 2009 and 2010, becoming the first state to have a female majority in any legislative chamber.
