Upcoming Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day features golf, run and bench press
Submitted by editor on Sat, 09/10/2016 - 6:28amThe third annual Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day is like Carson City’s mini Olympics, said founder Robey Willis.
“There’s so much going on with the golf tournament, the run and the weight-lifting competition,” he said. “I think that’s what makes it such a festive atmosphere. People are having so much fun.”

Hunt for underwater treasure at Sand Harbor with the High Desert Divers, all divers and snorkelers are invited. The Ferrari Hill Climb continues today in Virginia City if you feel the need for speed. Galaxy Theater brings another movie classic to the big screen today. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘The King and I’ 60th Anniversary Event plays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Keep reading: there’s something for everyone this weekend.

There will many activities including a four person scramble golf tourney with many categories, such as men's teams , women's teams, mixed and senior teams. It's only $75 person and Michael Hohl Motors is donating a vehicle for if a person who get's a hole in one. This event will be held at the Empire Ranch golf course, as will the other events.

Telegraph Square in downtown will be hopping with a Santa parade, vendors, and a pirate ship, in addition to great shops. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting a weekend-long art sale with one of a kind options throughout the campus. Art is a great gift, and making it is even more fun. Carson City Pottery is holding an open house today; a gift certificate for a pottery class is perfect for all skill levels.

Light after Dark Walk/Run to raise awareness for domestic violence and sexual assault

Bringing light to domestic violence and sexual assault is our goal for the Light after Dark Walk/Run. We want victims and survivors to know that there is LIGHT AFTER DARK.
The race is Saturday, Oct. 17th at 6:00pm at Riverview Park in Carson City. This year’s event is being dedicated in memory of Kirsten Krasovec, a Carson City woman whose life was taken at the hands of domestic violence.

There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

- IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk: free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. (7am-10am; Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course; Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line)

UNR student secures $10K grant to promote good health at Pyramid Lake High School

Braunworth, who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social work this spring, recently helped secure a $10,000 grant from Native STAND, a comprehensive, sustainable curriculum for training peer educators who promote healthy decision making for Native youth.

Ascent Runs is hosting a 5/10K and a half marathon at C-Hill on Saturday. You can register at the race, just make sure you aren’t late. Youth Football season has arrived with sign-ups for SYFL and Pop Warner on Saturday. Cheer on the Western Nevada College Wildcats as their Baseball and Softball teams battle against Salt Lake City Community College.

The Annual Feast of Chocolate, hosted by AAUW, is Saturday afternoon at the Plaza Event Center. The Vagina Monologues and One Billion Rising are both raising awareness this V-Day weekend for women’s issues.

This little valley is anything but sleepy. This weekend you can find Uncle Funkel playing at the Carson Cigar Company or Celtic traditional/rock fusion band, the Clarke Brothers at the Brewery Arts Center. Annie, Jr. will be at the Bob Boldrick Theater for this weekend only, so make sure to catch the amazing kids from Youth Theater Carson City.
Is your resolution to run more? Try the Centennial Slug it Out 5/10K
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Mon, 01/05/2015 - 5:18pmThe Centennial Slug it Out 5/10K is part of the Winter Trail Series offered by Ascent Runs. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Centennial Park, this run will get your blood pumping and your New Year's resolution off to a great start.
You'll want to park north of the baseball fields, past the tennis courts. Look for the blue truck and pop-up tents. It is predominantly a single track trail with some technical rocky sections. This is wild horse country. If you don't run into some wild horses, you will definitely run into some wild horse manure.
