Carson City man jailed for suspected domestic battery, threats and being a habitual criminal

A 53-year-old Carson City man was arrested for alleged felony and misdemeanor offenses including domestic battery, dissuading a victim from calling 911, habitual criminal with three prior convictions, possession of a controlled substance, threats, and a Department of Alternative Sentencing hold.

Ralph Clifford Hayes was arrested after deputies on Dec. 6 learned the victim had been battered. The injuries on the victim's body were documented by investigating sheriff's deputies. On Dec. 7, deputies were alerted the man went to the residence after having sent threatening text messages, the arrest report states.

He was located and arrested. On his person, deputies located a small metal vial inside his front left pocket, which contained methamphetamine, the report states.

Deputies learned Hayes is on supervision with the Department of Alternative Sentencing and had violated his bail conditions. They also learned he has five felony convictions. Bail: $114,259; $3,000 cash only.

In other arrests:
— A 61-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 1400 block of Como Street for suspicion of domestic battery first.

The man was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the location on report of a domestic battery. Deputies approached the residence and could hear a man and a woman arguing back and forth, according to the report.

Deputies made contact with the two occupants, and noted that the man had two scratch marks on the upper right portion of his chest.

Both occupants admitted they had been drinking. The woman said she and her husband had been married for 10 years, and they had been drinking and bickering.

She said during the argument, the man pushed her on to the couch, and she began to slap at him in a “playful manner” and then he got off of her.

Deputies asked further questions about him pushing her to the couch, and she then became guarded, according to the deputies. She said she didn’t want to talk any further because the deputies were going to take him to jail.

Finally she said they were arguing “like normal couples do.” She said he then took both of his hands and pushed her backwards onto the couch. She said she was on her back on the couch and began to slap the man in the face and chest to get him off of her. She said she was slapping him when she scratched his chest.

Deputies checked the woman for signs of injury and noted she had a bruise on the inner portion of her left bicep and some light redness on her left bicep. She denied medical attention.

The man declined to speak with deputies. He was arrested based on the evidence of the scratches on his body and the bruises on the woman’s body. Bail: $3,137.
