Carson High NJROTC cadets support cancer patients, spread awareness with fundraiser

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past October, Carson High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets sold pink aiguillettes to wear on their uniforms with all proceeds donated to the Carson Tahoe Health Cancer Resource Center.
The battalion provided an oversized check in the amount of $1,500 to Carson Tahoe Health representatives, Tami Stein, philanthropy specialist, and Paula Mayer, community & foundation development officer, yesterday on the football field.
“I am named after my grandmother, Maria, who died of breast cancer,” said Carson High tenth-grader and NJROTC Petty Officer 1st Class Maria Benshoof. “I felt a special connection with her through all of this. It felt really cool to be able to support something so impactful in our community.”
Aiguillettes are ornamental shoulder cords worn on a uniform. Those who purchased cords have proudly worn them throughout the month of October. The pink cords helped unify the platoon and represented the unit’s support for those affected by breast cancer.
The pink aiguillettes were worn during the Nevada Day and Virginia City's Veterans Day parades, as well as several Color Guard events performed throughout the month of October. The fundraiser was designed to bring more awareness about breast cancer to the cadets and to help the community by supporting those in need.
