Nevada State Museum announces new Education Curator
CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum is pleased to welcome Mahal Moon as its new Curator of Education to steer the institution’s community outreach through educational and volunteer programming.
“We’re so excited about the hiring of Ms. Moon as Curator of Education,” said Nevada State Museum Director Joshua Bonde. “She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience in museum education.”
A native of northern Nevada and educated as an anthropologist, Moon is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno. She gained museum experience as an innovative educator for the Please Touch Children’s Museum of Philadelphia, PA, and Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ.
Even though her travels had taken her far away from the Silver State, she remained a Nevadan at heart and longed to return home.
"I take immense pride in being a Nevadan,” Moon said. “In this new role, my goal is to provide support to people from all walks of life in finding representation in this space and contributing to the story of the Silver State.”
Bonde said her Nevada roots are an asset, because this means there’s more than just a museum professional in the curator seat.
“She understands the importance of the Nevada State Museum and being a member of this great community,” Bonde said.
Moon said opening up the Museum to the community with new experiences is something she is really focused on.
“I look forward to collaborating with my Museum colleagues to create new opportunities for members of our community to connect with Nevada's natural and cultural heritage in meaningful and exciting ways," she said.
Mahal Moon can be reached at the Nevada State Museum via email at mmoon@nevadaculture.org or by calling 775-687-4810, ext. 243.
