Carson City sheriff's deputies make drug, warrant arrests
Two were arrested early Friday for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia following a traffic stop, a Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report states.
Heaven Leigh Smith, 30, and Joseph Allen Birri, 24, were arrested at 4:36 a.m. in the area of East Fifth and South Roop streets following a traffic stop.
According to the booking report, a deputy was driving north on Stewart Street at Telegraph Street and was nearly struck by a vehicle that turned south onto Stewart Street from Telegraph.
The officer made a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Birri, who seemed lethargic and was reacting slowly while speaking. The officer told him why he was stopped and asked for documentation. The man was only able to provide a Nevada driver's license. The officer asked for the female passenger's identification. She did not have any but provided her name and date of birth, the arrest report states.
A K-9 did an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive to the passenger side door. A search of the vehicle was done where a small baggie of suspected methamphetamine was recovered from the center console. Both were advised of their Miranda rights, and agreed to speak and neither admitted to the drugs being theirs. During intake at the jail, a baggie of suspected cocaine was located in Birri's wallet, the report states. Bail: $3,637 each.
