Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Nov. 30

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Nov. 24-30, 2014. Beginning Monday through Wednesday there will be lane closures on Calaveras Drive just east of Bulette Drive due to utility work. Flagger-controlled traffic will be in effect.

There will be work primarily in the shoulder E. Fifth Street from Roop Street to Saliman Road from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday. Elaine Street will remain closed to through traffic from Monday through Sunday. Please follow marked detour.

Work will continue Monday through Wednesday on the sidewalk along Nye Lane between Northgate Lane and Hot Springs Road and on Northgate Lane between Nye Lane and Hot Springs Road. The street will be open, but there will be parking restrictions.

There will be shoulder work on Overland Street between Bigelow Drive and Ponderosa Drive, Monday, Nov. 24, and Tuesday, Nov. 25. No delays are expected.

On Thursday, November 27, Mountain Street will be closed between Robinson Street and Washington Street from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the Carson City 2014 Turkey Trot.

Elsewhere around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra this week, if you are driving for the Thanksgiving holiday, most traffic-interfering work will be limited from Wednesday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Nov. 30.

Work continues on a $41 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Tahoe Ski Bowl Way to South Street in Homewood: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday for utility work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work is in winter suspension on a $20 million water-quality project from 0.1 mile north of the Eagle Falls Sidehill Viaduct No. 5 in Emerald Bay to the Meeks Creek Bridge in Meeks Bay. This project is adding new drainage features, curb and gutter in some locations, and resurfacing a nearly 7-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2015.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work is in winter suspension on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. The project is installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $15.1 million project to replace the bridge over Sly Park Road in Pollock Pines. The project will also add sidewalks to both sides of Sly Park Road, curb and gutter and curb ramps. Completion is expected by spring 2015.

Nov. 24-26: U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Sly Park Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect ramp closures from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday to Tuesday and midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday for striping. Motorists can also expect one-way traffic control on Sly Park Road from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and a full closure from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday and midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday for pavement work. Highway 50 is reduced to one lane in each direction.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $57 million project by El Dorado County to construct a new overcrossing over U.S. Highway 50, new on- and off-ramps with signalized intersections, and new bicycle and pedestrian facilities at Silva Valley Parkway in El Dorado Hills.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from Patterson Drive to Pleasant Valley Road in El Dorado: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for utility work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) from South Street in Georgetown to Traverse Creek Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for utility work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work continues on a $36 million project to increase the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance will be increased on six structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other three will have the roadway below dug down.

Nov. 23-26: Interstate 80 (Placer County) from King Road to Rock Springs Road to Gilardi Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures and ramp closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday for bridge work..

Nov. 24-26: Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Sierra College Boulevard to Horseshoe Bar Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday for bridge work.

Nov. 24-26: Interstate 80 (Placer County) Cape Horn Road to Magra Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday and 7 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday for bridge work.

State Route 49 (Sierra/Yuba County) from Marysville Road to Yuba Pass Summit: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for maintenance work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at Taylor Road in Roseville: Westbound motorists can expect the on-ramp closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday for a maintenance operation.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at Elm Street in Auburn: Westbound motorists can expect the on-ramp closed from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Yuba Gap to Kingvale: Motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for guardrail repair.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Blue Canyon Road to the Whitmore Maintenance Station: Westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday for ditch cleaning

Interstate 80 (Nevada/Sierra County) from the Nevada County line to the Nevada state line: Motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday for utility work.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Prosser Hill Road to Cottonwood Creek Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for maintenance work.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.
