Dutch Bros. owners hope to meet Carson City demand with new store
As the only Dutch Bros. Coffee store in the region, the little drive-up kiosk-style hut in the Carson Mall parking lot at 1231 S. Carson Street attracts a lot of business.
Long lines at certain times of the day are normal, but local franchise owners Andy and Jill Head say it’s a sign that the Dutch Bros. culture has caught fire in Carson City and surrounding areas.
“We strive to move things along as quickly as possible,” said Any Head, who started working at Dutch Bros. in Southern Oregon where he and his wife both grew up. “I just fell in love with the company, their culture and vision for the way they do things.”
The Heads opened the area’s first Dutch Bros. in May 2007, taking over an existing coffee hut on the Carson Mall property.
After more than nine years at the one location, they decided it was time to expand the franchise to another location in the Nevada state capital.
“We’ve been interested in expansion and working hard toward that over the last 3 years,” Andy Head said. “We’ve always wanted to grow the brand here in Carson City and provide more jobs and more opportunities for our employees.”
The Heads said they chose a lot situated between a strip mall and Auto Zone on the south side of East William Street, or Highway 50 East, because of its good mix of vehicle and foot traffic in the area.
“We really liked the location due to the amount of vehicle and foot traffic with the high school being nearby,” Andy Head said. “It seems like a good place to operate with the number of other businesses in the area.”
Ground was broken on the new franchise store Nov. 2, said the Heads, who hope to open the second location in January.
The new Dutch Bros. Coffee shop will be larger than the one at the Carson Mall, the Heads said, with a 500 square-foot building that can accommodate more customers.
The store will feature a single-sided drive through on the east wing of the building and walk-up service on the west side.
The front of the building will face William Street/Highway 50, Head said.
“It’s got a great layout,” he said. “It will be bigger and have more capacity for our customers.”
Head also said opening a second coffee stop in Carson City will help take some of the load off the other store.
“It might take a little pressure off the other one,” he said. “Our volume has always been a factor.”
But in spite of the lines that seem to spring up at a Dutch Bros. coffee stop, Head said the feedback from patrons in the community remains nothing but positive.
It’s this kind of response that the Dutch Bros. brand and its culture seems to generate, he said, and is a key reason behind the expansion.
“We have had a lot of community support and we are really excited about this,” said Andy Head.
