Never Forget: September 11 remembrance ceremony to be held Sunday at Mills Park
The Carson City community is invited to attend a brief 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11th, at 8:15 a.m. at the World Trade Center I-beam memorial in Mills Park.
As the nation and world look towards the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Carson City will join organizations and individuals across the country and across the globe to remember and honor the emergency service personnel and thousands of innocent men, women, and children killed in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001.
Fire Chief Robert Schreihans recently stated:
"Each year we gather together to remember the events of Sept 11, 2001. This year will mark the 15th year since the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Supervisor Jim Shirk was instrumental in bringing the steel beam from the World Trade Center to Mills Park, and we are proud to once again come together as a community in remembrance. We remember the pain and anguish inflicted upon thousands of innocent victims and their families.
"But, we also remember the courage and dedication of thousands of police and firefighters who rushed into burning buildings to save lives and rescue their friends and neighbors. Many of them gave what Abraham Lincoln described at Gettysburg as the ‘last full measure of devotion.’ It is in their honor that we join together to remember."
The ceremony will include the presentation of the colors, flag lowering, ceremonial bell ringing, moment of silence, taps, and prayer for those who died in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and on Flight 93. There will also be commemorative remarks from Congressman Mark Amodei, Mayor Bob Crowell, Sheriff Ken Furlong, and Deputy Fire Chief Robert Charles.
The theme as in past years is, “To remember what happened, to never forget, and to recognize first responders,” said Crowell.
The World Trade Center I-beam Memorial is located in the grassy area not far from the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at the east end of Mills Park near East William and Saliman streets.
Let us come together for the 15th anniversary of 9/11 to honor, remember and reunite. For additional information, please contact Steve Brunner, Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Deputy Director, at (775)887-2262 or sbrunner@carson.org.
