Clear Creek Road closing to the public
The Nevada Appeal has a story about the residents of Clear Creek Road putting up a gate to shut out public access.
This has been a long-simmering issue. You can't really blame the residents, who are trying to protect themselves from liability if someone gets hurt on this private road, which provides access to popular hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and picnic areas.
The problem is the road should not be private. When the current Highway 50 was built, the governments of Douglas and Carson City, and the Washoe Tribe, didn't want to take over the road, so it reverted to the landowners. But since that time, there have been many people building houses along this road, and even more who are accessing it for recreational purposes.
What isn't clear from the story is whether there will be a gate barring access from the recently opened interchange on Highway 50 that accesses a private golf community near the top of Clear Creek Road.
The issue will be discussed by the Carson City Open Space Committee on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.
