Allegations of inappropriate contact involving juveniles at summer program being investigated
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorneys Office are investigating allegations of inappropriate contact involving children enrolled in the city’s parks and recreation summer program.
Parents of children enrolled in the city’s Summer Kamp program were made aware of the situation through an email addressed to them Thursday by the parks and recreation office, which announced they’ve been made aware of allegations and assured parents the matter is being investigated. The Parks and Recreation letter advised to parents that a victim witness advocate is available Friday in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Friday that because the allegations involve juveniles, law enforcement cannot disclose information regarding the investigation. Furlong notes that all involved in the investigation are juveniles and does not involve adults.
“We are restricted to what we can and cannot acknowledge,” he said. He noted that typically these kinds of alleged incidents do take time to investigate.
Here is the letter sent out Thursday:
Dear Parents,
I regret to inform you that, today, August 4, 2016, we were made aware of a possible situation involving an individual associated with the Summer Kamp program, and allegations that there may have been inappropriate contact with some children enrolled in the program. Please be assured that all appropriate steps have been taken to ensure that your child is safe, and that the involved individual does not have access to any City property or any children enrolled in the program. This matter is also under investigation by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Please know that your child’s safety and well-being are of the utmost importance to us, which is why we have taken immediate action to address this situation.
We understand that, as parents, you are concerned about the safety of your child and may have questions about what happened. You will naturally want to talk to your child directly to find out whether he or she was involved. However, we request that you not do so, and would caution you that any such discussions may jeopardize any future investigation. If you have immediate concerns, you should contact Victim Advocate Frankee Haynes, at the number listed below.
A representative from the Summer Kamp program and a Victim-Witness Advocate will be available at the Community Center, Sierra Room, on August 5, 2016, from 8:00 am until 10:00 am, from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm, and from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, to answer questions and provide further information. In the event you are unable to attend one of those sessions, please feel free to contact the Victim-Witness Advocate:
