National Endowment for the Arts Big Read finale Carson City event Friday with 'U.S. Marshal'
The 30-day National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program wraps up Friday, June 1, with its final event, Meet the Marshal, and showing of the 2010 version of "True Grit" by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club at the Bob Boldrick Theater at 6 p.m.
Entry is free with a valid Carson City Library card, and $5 for adults and seniors and $3 for students without a current card. Mayor Bob Crowell will present Marshal Christopher Hoye III, event keynote speaker, with a proclamation of appreciation.
After receiving the grant in late 2017, Mark Salinas, arts and culture curator for Carson City, reached out to Hoye regarding visiting Carson City to speak about his experience as a US Marshal and how a Marshal’s job compares to that of the 1870s Rooster Cogburn character of Portis’ novel.
“Marshal Christopher Hoye’s enthusiastic contribution to Carson City’s NEA Big Read Events shows how arts and culture can connect the state and communicate across disciplines,” Salinas said. “His professional background of community service along with his own personal journey of growing up in Las Vegas, struck me as an inspirational message we should send home with our kids. This is a great summer send off for the entire community.”
The 30-day NEA Big Read program began May 3 with a kick-off "True Grit" art exhibit at Western Nevada College, and has had unique events such as movie nights, reading groups at the Carson City Senior Center and High School, concerts and participation from local businesses hosting events, as well as a private event with Marshal Hoye for members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.
