Senator Cyclists adopts Wild Horse Trail, Carson City's newest mountain biking trail
Carson City’s Senator Cyclists adopted the newest biking trail in Carson, located behind the softball fields at the Centennial Sports Complex, and participated in a trail clean up Thursday afternoon despite the weather.
The Wild Horse Trail was created by then-Carson-High-Senior Connor McRae and Carson City’s muscle powered as a part of McRae’s senior project in 2018.
Now, the Senator Cyclists, a youth cycling team for Carson City of which McRae is a member, are officially adopting the trail as their own.
The “Adopt-a-Trail” program was created by Carson City Parks and Recreation Volunteer Coordinator Chelsea Kincheloe through her participation with Americorps.
“The trail is relatively new, so there’s not an excessive amount to clean, but we’ll be installing new signs,” said Kincehloe.
The new signage includes wayfinding, directional signs for cyclists to know where the trails are, as well as a sign noting the Senator Cyclists are the new adopters of the trail.
According to Kincheloe, putting up trails in the BLM and city-leased lands keeps the areas clean, and discourages littering and homeless encampments. In the case of the land behind Centennial, it is technically BLM land, which is leased by Carson City for the mountain biking trails.
The Wild Horse trail is important not only to the city’s mountain biking enthusiasts, but the Senator Cycling youth cyclists and the region’s teams.
There are over a dozen youth mountain biking teams in the region, said Nate Harrison, one of the coaches of Senator Cycling, but they haven’t been able to host a race in Carson City due to the current trails not meeting the criteria for youth races. However, with the Wild Horse trail, that could potentially change.
Senator Cycling allows cyclists aged middle school to high school. To learn more about the Senator Cycling, check out https://www.senatorcycling.org
