Downtown Coin Club show brings buyers, sellers and collectors to Carson City
Rare coins by the thousands remain on display, for sale or trade today through 4 p.m. at the Carson Nugget at the annual Downtown Coin Club Show. This all-ages coin event brought more than 300 collectors and numismatics to the Nugget on Saturday.
A hobby that had been waning, coin collecting got a huge bounce beginning in 1998 when the U.S. Mint began striking statehood quarters, explained Dan Wilson, owner of Downtown Coin in Carson City. The statehood quarters and the downturn in the economy prompted a desire for gold and silver coins, driving collectors nationwide by the thousands to bring "their collections to shows like these," he said.
Downtown Coin Club organizer Trish Wilson noted the hobby has developed great enthusiasm by children as well as adults, many of whom were on hand at Saturday's event.
One such young collector is Paul Honeycutt, 12, who walked into the show with $8 and by mid-afternoon he had bought and sold coins and currency, netting him $89.
"I didn't know I could make this much," Paul said. "All I did was start asking questions and then began to buy some. It's a lot of fun."
The Coin Show features 24 dealers, coins, medals, tokens, currency, bullion and exonumia as well as collectibles - plus, coin supplies. Two tables devoted to Kids education and several interesting displays of material owned by Downtown Coin Clubmembers. Free appraisals and a $2 admission, no charge for the Kids.
Downtown Coin has been selling Raffle tickets, which are are $1 or 5 for $ 6 or $10 for 12. Prizes include a $ 5 gold piece, a 10 ounce silver bar, a Carson City GSA Morgan dollar and 2 - 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagles.
