Two Douglas County Commissioners in altercation at Lake Tahoe meeting
There was an altercation between two members of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Thursday at a meeting in Stateline at Lake Tahoe.
The incident happened at around 5:55 p.m. South Tahoe Now reports the incident involved two board members, Commissioner Chairman Barry Penzel and Commissioner John Engels.
According to Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges, the Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the commissioners meeting at Stateline for a heated argument.
A few minutes later an altercation broke out. Both parties were separated on their own, only minor injuries were reported, said Elges in a news release.
The discussion at the time of the altercation involved a debate about a planned South Tahoe event center in Stateline. During the meeting, commissioners made personal attacks between each other as well as members of the public, according to South Tahoe Now, which was observing the meeting online.
The sheriff's office reports the incident is an open investigation and no further information will be provided at this time. The case will be referred to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review.
An observer in the audience said one of the commissioner's had a skin tear, according to South Tahoe Now.
