Charters of Freedom Carson City setting completed, donations sought
A display of the Charters of Freedom — etched replicas of the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights — can now be viewed by the public at the Carson City Courthouse located at 885 East Musser Street, said local project organizer Chuck Slavin.
Installation of the setting was completed earlier this month, he said, after the 501(c)3 non-profit Foundation Forward helped organizers in Nevada bring history to life.
Exact copies of the historical United States documents are etched on quarter-inch bronze plates that are safely secured under lighted, damage-resistant glass, and mounted on carved granite settings.
Charters of Freedom Carson City is the first such setting west of the Mississippi River, said Foundation Forward Communications Director Andrew Young.
An official dedication ceremony is scheduled for Flag Day, June 14 at 12 p.m. on the courthouse plaza.
But work on the display's behalf is far from finished, Slavin said.
"We continue to raise money for the project and have a new fundraising mechanism," he said. "One hundred percent of all donations goes toward labor and material for the project."
About $20,000 has been raised through donations so far, he said, little more than a quarter of the setting's $75,000 total cost.
Donated time and materials from local businesses such as Newt Concrete Construction, Meeks Hardware and Lumber, American Ready Mix, and 3D concrete helped to off-set the project's total cost, Young said.
Charters of Freedom settings are paid for entirely by private funds, he said, so their costs are reliant on donations from the community.
Donations can be made one of three ways, Slavin said.
Donors can purchase a brick paver for $100 and have it personally inscribed with a non-offensive message up to three lines at 22 characters (including spaces) per line. Most inscriptions, he said, include donor names or the names of loved ones, businesses, organizations and others they are dedicated to.
The pavers will then be placed in the ground immediately in front of the Charters of Freedom setting, Slavin said, and all donor names will be included in a time capsule built into the setting.
Donors who give $500 or more will have their names etched on a bronze plaque that is a permanent part of the setting, he said.
Donations by check should be made payable to Carson City Charters of Freedom and mailed to: Charters of Freedom, c/o Ken Brown, Ltd, 1021 South Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701.
