Carson City Parks and Recreation on the difference between non-venomous Gopher Snakes and Rattlesnakes
It’s that time of year, when our cold blooded friends start basking in the heat of the sun. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, like this Gopher Snake, that may be trying to cross the road in search of prey or shelter.
Gopher Snakes are non venomous but share many similarities with Rattlesnakes, which they share habitat with.
Not only are their coloration and pattern similar, but they will also mimic Rattlesnake behavior by coiling up and shaking their tail, while emitting a hissing sound.
This mimicry is used in order to scare away potential predators.
