Students encouraged to walk to school Wednesday for Nevada Moves Day
Students throughout the state are encouraged to walk or bike — even take a scooter or skateboard — to school Wednesday as part of the annual Nevada Moves Day.
“It’s a good chance for kids to get comfortable walking or biking to school,” said Cortney Bloomer, Safe Routes to School coordinator. “The kids get super excited. It’s about a healthy community and an active community.”
Several schools throughout Carson City have planned events to recognize the day.
“Schoolchildren joined by parents, teachers and administrators will take part in organized walks to promote walking or bicycling to school,” said Dan Davis, spokesman for the Carson City School District. “The day celebrates the fun and benefits of walking and bicycling to school. It also encourages K-8 students, school staff and families to get physically active.”
Bloomer is also reminding motorists to be especially aware of pedestrians that day.
Nevada Moves Day started in 2010 to get students moving. Bloomer would like to see it expand beyond that.
“It was originally conceived as something for kids to do,” she said. “I’d like to see it become and entire community event.”
She encourages adults to participate as well, walking to work or going for a walk during their lunch breaks — then expanding it to more than just one day a year.
“The bigger piece is creating a community where walking and biking are just part of what we do, part of our personality,” she said.
As usual, she said, the weather in March is unpredictable. And that’s part of the lesson.
“Sometimes it’s cold, and sometimes it’s hot,” she said. “You just have to deal with that. We want to get the message out that you walk to school no matter what.”
