UPDATE 5:25 PM: A man brought what is believed to be a hand grenade into the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Musser Street Tuesday afternoon, which prompted the sheriff's office to close and a bomb squad from Douglas County to be called to the scene.
The incident happened just after 4 p.m. when a man brought in the explosive, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. He said he found it and didn't know what to do with it and thought he could turn it into the sheriff's office, said Furlong. He is not in any trouble, the sheriff added.
A bomb squad from Douglas County was called to the scene and the area around the Carson City Sheriff's Office has been cordoned off limits, with traffic being re-routed, according to dispatch.
Furlong said everyone from the building was let off work early as part of an evacuation. The building is also home to a Nevada Highway Patrol substation.
In a Tweet, NHP Northern Command wrote: "Someone brought a grenade to CCSO. Building Has been evacuated awaiting the bomb squad." In a second Tweet, NHP used a photo of a grenade and wrote: "If you come across something that looks like this in your garage.....DO NOT HANDLE IT or bring it to the Police Station. Call 911."
