Lake Tahoe's Granlibakken offers offbeat ideas for business retreats
A midnight candy room with collections of sweet and salty treats for late-night creative sessions. A handcrafted ice bar buffet atop the mountain accessible only by snowshoe or ski followed by overnight camping in a snow cave. A chef escorting guests to the local organic grocer to assure specific dietary needs are met. What’s that, gluten free? No problem. Kosher? Got it nailed.
That’s what meeting planners and company conference reps can expect at Granlibakken Conference Center & Lodge at North Lake Tahoe, one mile south of Tahoe City. Tahoe’s original ski resort has a long history of catering to groups of various sizes and types, as well as thought patterns.
The tech group with the midnight sugar rush was amped for the meeting and beyond, claiming “sweet” success. The science experts who high-tailed it to the ice bar literally stepped and slept outside the box – and four walls of a meeting room for a peak experience.
The flexible nature of Granlibakken, an independent family-owned resort, provides a veteran staff an opportunity to bend the rules and try something new when unique requests arise.
“We’ve found that our ability to give guests exactly what they want or what is unexpected is what keeps groups coming back,” said Kay Williams, Granlibakken Resort Manager. “It’s in our company DNA to do what others can’t, and although at times we’re afraid to ask how it came about, it’s always fun to surprise our groups with the possibilities here.”
In addition to the desire for offbeat requests, Granlibakken provides exponential value to groups on the hunt for a productive training or creative session: solitude. Nestled in the mountainside near Tahoe City and a half mile from the shores of Lake Tahoe, the resort is tucked away from the otherwise distracting amenities of a popular ski destination while being minutes from world class restaurants, boutique shopping, ski resorts and breathtaking vistas. Being slightly removed from the action affords groups the ability to disconnect from the rest of the world in a quiet, serene setting to maximize productivity and inspire focus among event participants.
So, anyone need their own mountain? Groups also have the option to host outdoor team building activities with private reservation of the Granlibakken Ski and Sled Hill for $750 per day, Monday through Thursday.
If a more traditional meeting room set-up is desired – the kind with lights, heat, ceilings, windows and the latest in connectivity, Granlibakken can handle from four to 400. Resort lodging runs the gamut from one to eight bedroom condominiums.
Granlibakken’s Meet and Ski Package provides meeting effectiveness and the great outdoors, combining group productivity with the beauty and recreational attraction of Lake Tahoe and its world class ski resorts. There’s lodging, group meeting space, free scalable internet, three daily meals including après ski cocktail reception for event attendees, and a choice of the day’s lift ticket to one of seven nearby Lake Tahoe resorts: Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Mt. Rose, Northstar at Tahoe, Sierra at Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA, and Sugar Bowl. Rates start at $186 per person, per night.
Additional activity options included with Meet and Ski Packages allow guests to exchange their daily lift ticket for a $50 credit toward any spa service at the Lighthouse Spa or for one day trail access at the Tahoe Cross Country Center including rental equipment.
