Winter weather returns to Carson City region and Sierra this week
With weather conditions that have proven dry so far this winter, forecasters say there may be a change ahead with storm systems producing rain and snow in the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions this week.
Beginning later Monday, a weak and fast moving storm system will bring light rain and high elevation snow to the region through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulations will likely be limited to areas above 7,000 feet with up to 4 inches possible.
A stronger and much colder storm is forecast to develop Thursday and continue through Friday. Strong winds are likely on Thursday with gusts above 50 mph possible in lower elevations, while Sierra ridge gusts could reach 100 mph.
Rain and high elevation snow also arrives with this storm on Thursday. Snow levels will begin to fall Thursday afternoon, then drop to all valley floors Thursday night through Friday.
Forecasters say this storm has the potential to produce heavy snowfall and poor visibility for travel and outdoor activity, especially for the Sierra.
Snowfall totals may exceed 1 foot above 7,000 feet, with several inches up to 1 foot possible for valleys near the Sierra and Lake Tahoe and in far western Nevada down to near 5,500 feet.
For lower elevations of western Nevada including Carson City, accumulating snow is possible Thursday night and Friday, according to the weather service. Slick and snow covered roads could impact the peak commute times Thursday evening through Friday.
For next weekend, colder conditions will continue with another storm possibly bringing more snow and windy conditions to the region, according to the weather service.
The forecast for Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County this week calls for party cloudy conditions Monday with highs near 60, with a chance of rain Monday night into Tuesday with daytime highs in the low 50s. Wednesday will bring a brief return of partly cloudy skies, with high temperatures in the low 50s. By Thursday, however, gusty winds will bring in a combination of rain and then periods of snow showers, which are expected to last through Friday.
