UNR cancer researcher to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Ron Pardini, PhD, emeritus professor of biochemistry at the University of Nevada-Reno. Dr. Pardini will tell the story of his decades-long quest to find effective nutritional approaches to cancer therapy. The scientific advances that resulted hold great promise for the future of health care.
In 1961 Ron Pardini earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Cal Poly, and in 1965 added a Ph.D. in Food Science and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois. In the 1980's he established the Athymic Mouse Facility inside the Howard Medical Sciences Building. That modern laboratory, part of UNR's Department of Biochemistry, provided an educational environment where research professors, lab technicians, post-doctoral fellows and students were able to work together, utilizing established pre-clinical models to solve problems in cancer research.
Dr. Pardini's research demonstrated that different types and levels of dietary fat can slow tumor growth rates, increase tumor responsiveness to therapy, lower drug-host toxicity of certain anticancer agents, and reduce cachexia, the wasting syndrome associated with cancer victims. This research laid the groundwork for nutritional-intervention clinical trials designed to improve the outcome of chemotherapy and patient well-being.
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, October 2nd, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Prof. Pardini's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30.
