August 18, 2014 - 3:00pm Have your voice heard at this public meeting regarding you, your family and future generations access and use of the Open Spaces purchased with public dollars or transferred by BLM to the people of Carson City.
Monday, August 18 the Carson City Open Space Advisory Committee will be holding an Open House and Open Space Meeting at the Community Center to address the future of the Carson River corridor properties and approve the rules and regulations for proposed management plan for use and access of the Open Space properties.
Open Space land in the Carson River both sides of the river corridor is/or will extend from Douglas County to the Lyon County borders. The BLM lands transfer of Silver Saddle Ranch, Prison Hill and the Ambrose area will include the Pine Nut Access between Lloyds Bridge and Mexican Dam, and river access on both sides of the river. Historically, the accessory roads off the primary river roads on both sides of the river along the entire corridor, at Mexican Dam, Golden Eagle, Brunswick Canyon has been accessible to motor vehicle to the river for picnicking, fishing, boating, camping, and swimming.
The Pine Nuts accessory roads have been open to access the backcountry, for off-roading, hill climbing, rock hounding, pine nut collecting, camping, Christmas tree and woodcutting. It is the intention of the majority of the Board members and the City Supervisors to close many of the accessory roads, existing two lane trail routes for exclusive use of “passive” recreation (hikers, bicycles and in some cases build new trails parallel to the existing roads) and the for the use of V&T only.
Currently Open Space oversees the Deer Run Bridge area, now closed, blocked with boulders, gates, and jersey barriers, by Carson City Open Space and Public Works. The staging areas for off road vehicles or motor cycle trailer and truck parking eliminated and the historically used BLM cable route to Sedge Road was moved unbeknownst to the BLM manager and Carson City has not intention of relocating it or providing a staging area. This has encouraged off roaders to remove the barriers and create new roads, which is unacceptable and creates animosity.
The event will be in Bonanza Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street from 3 to 5:45 p.m. and will include information, maps and draft recommendations from the Management Plan. Written comments are also encouraged.
Immediately following the open house, the Open Space Advisory Committee will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center with a presentation and an opportunity to submit public testimony.
A second opportunity to view the presentation and submit public testimony will be at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on Sept. 2, 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center. All comments are encouraged and welcomed.
