Nevada Reads 2023 Books Explore Family, Folklore, Technology, and Human Connection
Nevada Reads is a statewide book club that invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and come together in community conversations and literary programs. Author GennaRose Nethercott is featured at June 2023 events at public libraries across Nevada.
Nevada Humanities announces the inaugural book selections for its statewide 2023-2024 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads is a statewide book club that invites Nevadans of all ages to read selected works of literature and come together in their home communities for a series of literary programs to explore and share ideas inspired by the books they read.
In 2023, four books have been selected that address the themes of family, roots, and folklore as well as technology and human connection. The 2023 Nevada Reads books are:
Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott, a novel that explores Jewish and Eastern European folklore, intergenerational family ties, and the threads that bind us together.
Wandering in Strange Lands: A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots by Morgan Jerkins, a nonfiction book that explores the consequences of The Great Migration through the author’s own family stories, folklore, and heritage.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, a novel that illustrates the intimacies of friendship while also showcasing how games and play can be a powerful force in bringing people together.
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, a novel that features the stories of five characters—young and old—who dream big dreams and weave the threads of a legendary story through three different eras in time.
In June, GennaRose Nethercott, author of Thistlefoot, will launch the 2023 Nevada Reads program series and visit libraries around Nevada for book talks and performances, bringing her novel Thistlefoot to life with hand-crafted shadow panoramas and puppetry.
Nethercott’s novel weaves Eastern European folklore with Jewish history in a tale about the ancestral hauntings that stalk us through time, and the uncanny power of story to heal; this program is recommended for ages 12+.
The Thistlefoot Traveling Puppet Show Featuring Author GennaRose Nethercott will be held at the following libraries across Nevada. These special events are free and open to the public; book signings will follow each event.

“Each year, our Nevada Reads program delivers innovative and exciting ways to explore the ideas featured in each of our selected Nevada Reads books,” said Christina Barr, executive director of Nevada Humanities. “Author GennaRose Nethercott is the perfect writer to launch our 2023 year of Nevada Reads and Nevada Reads in Your Library programs. Her captivating shadow puppet performance of her novel Thistlefoot drives home the power of story to bind us to the demons of our past, but also to the stories of our ancestors who ground us as we live our lives and move into the future.”
