Explore ‘Miracle Country’ with Nevada Humanities in 'Telling Stories and Talking Books' series
Nevada Humanities will host a free, virtual event with authors Kendra Atleework and Michael P. Branch, celebrating the paperback release of Ms. Atleework’s book Miracle Country: A Memoir of a Family and a Landscape.
Featuring select readings from 2021 Nevada Reads author Kendra Atleework and her debut book, Miracle Country, as well as from the work of Michael P. Branch, the two authors will discuss memoir writing, inspirations from nature and landscape, and how spending time in the high desert has influenced their writing. This online conversation will include an audience Q&A. Explore Miracle Country will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at 12-1 pm PDT on Zoom. This event requires advance registration; register for this event at nevadahumanities.org.
Nevada Reads is a statewide book club that invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and then come together in their communities to share ideas and perceptions inspired by the books they have read. Programming featuring the selected books will take place throughout the state in 2021, including online book clubs, outdoor adventures, virtual discussions and workshops, and community partnership-led initiatives. Program details will be announced throughout the year. Visit nevadahumanities.org for news and information.
“Our Nevada Reads programming this year places the environmental humanities front and center. During these times of disconnect, conversations about the outdoors and the natural world bring us together as we forge connections with one another and the spaces around us,” notes Christina Barr, executive director of Nevada Humanities. “Miracle Country exemplifies the love and respect for a home and a region, and calls for us to see the bigger picture when it comes to taking care of the earth. We are thrilled to be in the company of these two brilliant nature writers as they converse about the importance of place, nature writing, and life growing up in the high deserts of the west.”
Throughout June Nevada Humanities is also offering a series of free online workshops inspired by the illustrations and themes found in the 2021 Nevada Reads book World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. Wonders of Nature: Creative Workshops with Nevada Humanities encourage participants to spend time together learning new artistic and listening techniques from artists around Nevada and to think more deeply and creatively about the natural world.
Upcoming Nevada Reads creative workshops include:
Wonders of Nature: Sound Topographies and Listening Deeply Outdoors with Fil Corbitt on June 9 at 4-5 pm and June 13 at 10-11 am. Wonders of Nature: The Spaces Between — The Form of Trees with Anne Hoff on June 23 at 4-5 pm and June 27 at 10-11 am. Register for workshops here.
