New advocacy group forms for Carson City downtown businesses
Forty-nine downtown Carson City businesses, 11 downtown property owners and many citizens have come together to form what is now known as the "Downtown 20/20 Action Advocacy Group."
Spearheaded by business owner and longtime Downtown Advocate Doreen Mack, the Downtown businesses have been gathering together to support basically what is known as the 2006 City Revitalization Plan. Mack, owner of Lofty Expressions and new president of the group commented "The amazing Downtown Businesses have united to turn this Action Advocacy groups plans into positive actions for the Downtown! To truly take action to help the City and our community to revitalize our beautiful Historic Downtown."
The Carson City Downtown 20/20's first goal was to organize and then formalize the group. They have banded together to encourage a more responsive revitalization plan, stronger marketing, impactful advertising and a more strategic plan that truly benefits the Downtown Businesses.
They want to have a positive voice in the Downtown community and back it up with prompt actions. The group will strengthen its community partners and relationships, share resources and maximize its effort for the future plans, projects and events.
Some of the of the groups strong voices are John P. Rutledge of Rutledge Law Center Ltd. Who said: "I'm excited to be a part of the downtown's transformation into an eclectic and fun place to shop, dine and do business."
Jeannette Kelley a Carson City native and owner of the Downtown Horseshoe Club said: “For decades our city has worked diligently to prepare plans for improving and having more reasons for people to come Downtown. It is exciting to see that our Downtown can become even more appealing. We want the City Board of Supervisors to
know we want this and are willing to do all we can to support them in their efforts to revitalize our Downtown.”
The group held elections and has formed a powerful board consisting of Downtown business owners and citizens. The first Items for them to support is the City's recent Downtown conceptual parking plan to narrow Carson Street into a two lane Highway and remove the fences. They are also planning to ask to have a voice in future Carson City planning and development.
“This Action Group is talented, passionate, highly motivated and will move forward with revitalizing our Downtown," said Jim Phalan of High Sierra Brewery.
The Downtown 20/20 is promising to take a more active part in the marketing, advertising and bringing in of more events, activities, arts and entertainment. They want to support pedestrian mobility and accessibility and attract more sustainable retail businesses. They also desire to give business support and enhance the overall look and attraction of the Downtown experience for locals and tourists alike.
