Carson City's Chief Juvenile Probation Officer featured at Democratic tele-luncheon
Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Ali Banister, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for Carson City Juvenile Services. In addition to those duties, she also serves as an adjunct professor at Western Nevada College teaching juvenile law. At the tele-luncheon she will detail the range of juvenile services currently available in Carson City, with special emphasis on the psychological toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on the community's young people and their educational experience.
Prior to being promoted to Chief, Ali served as Deputy Chief, and has worked in many capacities of the juvenile legal system, from youth counselor at China Spring Youth Camp and Leighton Hall Detention Center to probation officer in both Fallon and Carson City. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Justice Management, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration. She also holds Nevada Management and Executive POST (Peace Officer's Standards and Training) certificates.
Studies published by the Center for Public Justice have shown that nearly three out of four youth in “juvie” suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues. Among that group, “20 percent suffer severe mental health problems, which limit their ability to function in daily life.” Chief Banister is passionate about addressing this increasing convergence of mental health and the juvenile justice issues. Her Ph.D. dissertation was on Trauma and Juvenile Justice, and she has established several programs and services designed to divert delinquent youth away from the juvenile justice system altogether, including the Juvenile Justice Assessment Screening Triage Team (JJASTT program), The Parent Project, The Family Engagement Program, School Resource Officers, Co-Occurring, and the Leadership and Resiliency Program. She collaborates on these matters regionally through her service on the Northern Nevada Mental Health Commission.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, April 5th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to masking and social distancing restrictions at in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for these Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
