Carson City Library hosts community reading of 'To Be Taught, If Fortunate'
The Carson City Library will host a community read of "To Be Taught, If Fortunate" by Becky Chambers this April for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club. Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.
In "To Be Taught, If Fortunate," a space explorer in a planetary system 15 light-years away begins to chronicle the story of the wonders and dangers of her mission, in the hope that someone back home might still be listening. The four-person team has been surveying habitable exoplanets and extraterrestrial life forms in a star system 15 light years away from Earth, but things at home have changed while they have been away on their long mission.
The title comes from a message by Kurt Waldheim, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as recorded on the Voyager Golden record sent into space in 1977: "We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship — to teach, if we are called upon; to be taught, if we are fortunate."
Becky Chambers is a science fiction author based in Northern California, best known for her Hugo Award-winning Wayfarers series.
