Former CC planner and redevelopment director Rob Joiner filed Friday in a very crowded race for City Supervisor Ward 1.
Joiner said although he left the city eight years ago to finish his government career as a top official in the City of Sparks, he continued to live in Carson City and has followed Carson City issues very closely.
Joiner said the so-called "Nugget Project" has merit but has not been presented in any final form that would fully protect the city and its taxpayers. He said it would make a lot more sense to place a new library and economic incubator on city owned land rather than private land that subjects the city to unknown future costs. Joiner also questioned the timing of the project in that the city face enormous financial pressures from declining revenues without possibly causing further strains from the Nugget Project.
Joiner said he authored Carson City's downtown area historic preservation plan and helped guide the town's early redevelopment programs. He said he also worked closely with Carson City lobbyist and former finance director Mary Walker in representing local city and county interests and needs during various sessions of the legislature. Joiner says he a "nuts and bolts kind of guy who also knows the ropes and inside scoop on city operations." He adds he's lived in Carson City for 26 years and loves the town. "If elected, I'll bring competent and fair-minded leadership to the city in these trying economic times."
Joiner will be running in the June 8th primary against five other candidates for Supervisor Ward One. The list includes businesswoman Karen Abowd, former CTH Board member Paul Saucedo, School Board Trustee Norm Scoggin, resident Gary Schulz, and local podiatrst and City Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sean Lehman.
