The Office of the Nevada Attorney General will host eight trainings starting on Tuesday, Jan. 31 running through Thursday, Feb. 9 throughout the state about the Nevada victim notification service.

The goal of the trainings is to teach first responders, victims of crime, victim advocates, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and community members about a service currently available in 13 of Nevada’s 17 counties called Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE).

Our Mission is to research and explore any paranormal activity in the greater Carson City area. To preserve protect and promote those locals important and noteworthy to the spirit/scientific realm, and to educate the public about the importance of those who cannot or will not escape the confines of the ether.

Little five year old Maddyson Palmer must undergo her third open heart surgery soon and she and her mom will have to travel to Las Vegas. Her Mom will also have to take time off work for travel, the surgery, and Maddyson's recovery time. They heed YOUR HELP!

TONIGHT - January 13, 2012, there will be a fundraiser at High Sierra Brewery in Carson City from 5 - 8 PM. A percentage of the sales will go toward their expenses and there will be raffles.

CASA OF CARSON CITY will begin a CASA volunteer training January 30, 5:30 to 8:30 at the Carson City Juvenile Court, 1545 E. 5th St.. Anyone is welcome to attend the first of the ten training sessions to learn more about CASA.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce presents the State of the City forum on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 a.m. at the Gold Dust West. Speakers include Mayor Bob Crowell, Supervisor Shelly Aldean, Sheriff Ken Furlong and City Manager Larry Werner. Cost is $20. Please RSVP before Feb. 7 by calling 775-882-1565.

For those Carson Now readers who have been here before, you probably notice some strange things about how the site looks this morning. We have been doing some work overnight to fix some minor problems, and we aren't quite finished. We should have this cleared up very soon. Meanwhile, the news of the day is still right here. Thanks.

Wonders Soccer Academy from Carson City is collecting old cell phones and ink cartridges through January 30, 2012 for the purpose of team fundraising and help meet the needs of the players. Wonders Soccer will receive money for each item collected during the fundraiser. The items will be turned in to a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology.

Meditation meetings weekly on Mondays at 5:30 and 7:00pm and Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Beginning instruction is given the first Monday every month at the 7pm meeting, and at any meeting if needed. Check out DharmaZephyr.org for more information.

When Carson City children are removed from the home due to abuse or neglect and placed in state custody the Carson City Juvenile Court appoints a trained community member to serve as guardian ad litem for the child.

Ordinary people with good communication skills, caring, patience and writing ability advocate for the best interests of the child while they are in state care.

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50E, Carson City. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. Our speaker will be Colonel Phillip W. Sierra Lutheran, northern Nevada's only Lutheran high school and the only Christian high school in the greater Carson City / Carson Valley area, will offer attendees a comprehensive look at the many programs and opportunities that have allowed SLHS to become one of the state's top high schools, as supported by the school's 99-percent college matriculation rate.

Carson City is pleased to once again offer Christmas Tree Recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management Inc. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular collection day or taken to one of the drop-off locations. Trees will be chipped in the sprintime and given to local residents to use for mulch in their yards. No flocked trees! This program continues to be a huge success. Carson City would like to thank everyone for their participation. Last year we were able to redirect 28.48 tons of wood waste from our Landfill.

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be shoulder work on S. Lompa Lane between Edmonds Drive and Grandville Drive. There will also be shoulder work on Edmonds Drive between Fairview Drive and Gentry Lane. Minimal delays are expected.

There will be work at North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected.

Friday, December 16th at 2:30 pm on the Carson High School Campus. The ceremony is the culmination of nearly three years of planning, fundraising and construction. The Greenhouse Project’s focus on using renewable energy and ecological sustainable growing methods make it the only one of its kind in Nevada.

The Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 and the Carson City Emblem Club # 507 is sponsoring a Christmas Party for Community Children on Saturday, Dec. 17th from Noon to 2:30 pm at the Carson City Elks Lodge located at 515 N. Nevada Street, Carson City. It is a free event for ages 0 – 12 years old. Parents are welcome to accompany them.

Live re-enactment with actors and animals, Saturday and Sunday, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Division and Musser Streets. Feel the Christmas story unfold as you drive or walk the path. From Carson St. turn west on 5th street, then north on Division Street to King Street.

The Nativity is the church’s gift to the community and there’s no cost to experience it. donations of non-perishable food will be accepted to help us feed the community’s out of work citizens.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located on 2180 S. Carson Street in Carson City, will offer train rides with Santa from 9am to 4 pm December 10th -11th and 17th- 18th, 2011.

Train rides are available for $6 per seat and will depart approximately every 25 minutes from 9:00am-4:00pm. Santa will be on board and visit all the children. Hot chocolate, food and refreshments will also be available provided by Warren Engine Company #1.

Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a Spaghetti Feed on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5 – 8pm to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry. $10.00 buys a spaghetti dinner, with $5.00 going directly to the Food Pantry.
Last month nearly 3000 people sought help from The Pantry, including 127 new families, a significant increase over last year. That number is expected to rise even more as Christmas approaches.

Occupy Carson City, an offshoot of the worldwide Occupy Wall Street movement, will be staging a protest Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at the Nevada State Legislature on Carson St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend the protest appropriately being held on Human Rights Day, and Occupy Carson City has chosen this day to take a stand and protest for human rights above corporate rights. The protest comes on the heels of a recently-released study that ranked Nevada last in the nation for children's healthcare, often considered an indicator of human rights in any particular

Carson City has been selected by Where to Retire, the only magazine in America geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions, as a top retirement destination and will be profiled in the feature story “8 Tempting Low-Tax Towns.” The January/February 2012 issue will be available nationwide on December 20, 2011.

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell wishes Willa Oldham Ramsden happy 100th birthday on Sunday, November 27th. Willa is a local historian who has written two books on Carson City history.

As part of its investigation into NV Energy’s Smart Meters program and its implementation, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled a workshop at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the PUCN’s Las Vegas office, 9075 West Diablo Drive, Suite 250, with videoconferencing to the Commission’s Carson City office, 1150 East William St.

NV Energy began installing Smart Meters in southern Nevada earlier this year. NV Energy is scheduled to start its second phase of installation in northern Nevada in December. The statewide installation project is scheduled to be completed by December 2012.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council. There are four (4) volunteer openings to fill a two (2) year term that expires January 2014.

The Shade Tree Council provides advice to the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every other month at 5:30 pm in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.
