For the last several months, the Galaxy Theater has been playing a movie from yesteryear on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week’s ‘Flashback’ is the disco classic ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ in all its polyester glory. For those interested in a nursing career, Western Nevada College is hosting an informational meeting that will cover what can be expected for those enrolling in the educational program. Now that spring is more or less here, Carson City BMX is back on the track. You’ll find their races on Sunday mornings, but Wednesdays are for practice.

A new week begins and brings us one day closer to warm weather. Karaoke night at the Fox Brewpub is an all-ages, family-friendly event, but all-day happy hour inside the Fox’ Den is meant just for the adults. Local theatre group, the Proscenium Players, have a few great productions coming these next few months; their monthly meeting is this evening at the Brewery Arts Center and anyone interested in theater or wanting to get involved is welcome to attend. Swing into the night with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at Carson Lanes.

The annual Father-Daughter Ball at Carson High School is just days away. Tickets have been flying off the proverbial shelf, and you aren’t going to want to miss out. Karaoke at Caterpillars Hookah Lounge features the hosts from J and M Productions; with over 25,000 songs to choose from, you are bound to find the right tune for your mood.

A quick drive around town confirms that spring is on its way. Carson kids have one last day to enjoy their spring break before school resumes and Lyon county begins their break today. It won’t seem like it today, but spring is on the way. We’ll be seeing sunny days in the sixties by week’s end. If you’re looking for a way to entertain the kids, dollar days at our two bowling alleys make for a fun, yet inexpensive, outing. The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting a week-long food drive. Bring your non-perishable donations to Browsers Corner Book Store and take a look around. It’s just unfortunate timing that today has been designated ‘Nevada Moves Day.’ With the heavy rain, it may not be the best time to try your hand at walking or biking to school. A break in the storm this afternoon will make for an easier trek home, but you can always take up the challenge after Spring break next week. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is fast approaching, and today is your last chance for in-person ticket sales. Head to the Carson High office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you’ve got cash in hand.

The Beginner Yoga class is a course for those new to yoga and for those who have tried yoga and are ready to renew their practice. Mary Kay is skillfull in working with all body types. The class will focus on self acceptance of the body, providing support to enjoy the pose with the use of props when needed. The instructor is Mary Kay Raponi.

An intention of gratitude, curiosity and relaxation is offered in the class while you experience:

— Foundational poses to increase strength and stretch your muscles safely.

Treat yourself to free yoga sessions with some of Northern Nevada’s top teachers, enjoy refreshments, and enter your name for valuable prizes at Carson City Yoga’s exciting open house celebration next Saturday, March 17.

A very happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Because of the holiday, just about everywhere will be closed with the exception of casinos and a few grocery stores with limited hours. Earn yourself a second helping of pie by participating in the annual Turkey Trot. In Carson City, you’ll start the 5K or 8K run at the Governor’s Mansion on Mountain Street. If you’re in the Carson Valley, head to Minden Park for their inaugural 5K.

If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

Community Yogi presents Gong Immersions for Health and Wellness with Avilone Starre every 3rd Saturday 11 a.m. to noon in Carson City. Join us in the Brewery Arts Center's beautiful Ballroom for an introduction to the healing power of the gong. The gong’s powerful frequencies flow through the body easily, clearing and raising the parts of our body that are out of tune, that are giving off a lower frequency. It leaves us feeling relaxed, refreshed and revitalized, stronger and more optimistic about life.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. I know it's hard to think about summer whilst scraping ice off your windshield, but the Community Discount Registration Event for Epic Rides at the Firkin and Fox will have you blissfully dreaming of bike rides in June. It's family fun at the Carson Library's Movie Night: bring the kids down for Finding Dory. Jazz it up with the Shipleys at Living the Good Life. Digital artists, or aspiring ones, will find camaraderie at Wired Wednesday. This month's meeting at Paradise Salon Spa Wellness will cover the upcoming City Wide Film-making Competition.

WEDNESDAY:

Get over the mid-week hump with a visit to one of Carson City’s art exhibits. There’s nothing like a little beauty to make your day. Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

Pioneer High School started the district’s first yoga class for PE and elective credit five years ago and the class has gained popularity throughout the years.

The winter solstice is today: the shortest day and longest night of the year. I’m always happy to hear that because it means longer days are on their way. The holiday frenzy continues, so don’t miss out on those pictures with Santa. Red’s Old 395 will send you off with a complementary 4”x6” photo, and Santa’s Village at the Carson Mall is open all day. Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. 75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.
