Thursday is something to celebrate. The long-awaited Nevada State Fair kicks off in Mills Park with a ribbon cutting by Governor Sandoval. Grab the kids, your friends, and family and enjoy carnival rides, county exhibits, civil war reenactments and much more. Our neighbors to the south are celebrating, too: the 106th Annual Carson Valley Days is this weekend. If you’re looking for something quieter, the lecture on the Civil War at the Gold Hill Hotel or an author’s talk on the Ghost Railroads of Central Nevada at the Nevada State Railroad Museum might be a better bet.

I hope no one accuses Wednesdays in Carson City to be boring: they're shaping up to be a happening little midweek reprieve. A new Farmers Market has sprouted on Third Street; Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz night at Westside Pour House tests your savvy; and a Jazz Jam at Living the Good Life will get you jiving. The Firkin and Fox offers up Jack Daniels as this month's Whiskey Wednesday spirit. Speaking of whiskey, Americana/roots rock performer Stacy Jones hits the stage at Sassafras during her 'Whiskey in the West' tour.

WEDNESDAY: Bike to Work Week

It's going to be toasty today. Luckily, weekly Parks and Rec 'Easy Walk' starts at 8 a.m., so you'll be off the trail before the sun gets too far overhead. The Brewery Arts Center hosts the Carson City Classic Cinema Club the first Tuesday of each month; join them this evening for trivia and a showing of John Wayne's 'Stagecoach.' Dance the night away to the sounds of big band or cowboys: swing dance lessons are at El Charro Avita, while country line dancing can be found in the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes.

TUESDAY: Bike to Work Week

The Nevada State Fair returns to Carson City Thursday, June 9 and will occupy Mills Park until Sunday, June 12. Free to attend, the Fair features live music, carnival rides, a car show, County exhibits, civil war reenactments, and more. Free parking can be found at Carson High School.

The June Wine Walk took place Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. throughout downtown Carson City.

Downtown is the place to be Saturday with over twelve hours jam packed full of fun. The Third and Curry Farmers Market begins at 8:30 a.m. From there head north on Curry to the Spring Vintage Faire at Due Sorella. Stick around for the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk at 1 p.m. The Rotary Club brings you the Capital City Brewfest at 3 p.m. Family friendly fun hits the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center: Mumbo Gumbo will have you dancing in the street.

What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. June is Bike Month in Carson City, and the weather is being more than cooperative. Bike to work week begins Monday, so get back in the swing of things with the Muscle Powered Bike Ride this afternoon. Help Comma Coffee welcome a new artist to their Backseat Gallery this evening: every first Wednesday you can a attend their artist reception. WEDNESDAY:

Not going to lie, I'm a lover of June. Not only is it unequivocally summer, it is also my birthday month. So today we say a fond farewell to May and the bizarre winter/spring/winter/summer weather that came with it. Early voting for the primary is underway at the Clerk's office in the Courthouse. Get out and explore the history of the west side of town with the Parks and Recreation easy walk. Head out to the archery range and learn to shoot a bow. Swing dance, line dance, and fire dancing are all out there for you to explore.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Take a look at the whole summary: there’s a whole lot of fun to be had around town during this three-day weekend.

A few days left of school, a few days left of May: summer is knocking on the door and insisting to be let in. If only it would bring some sunshine with it, we’d be set. Performing the best of Cole Porter to Stevie Wonder, the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s 17-piece jazz band will present “Music of the Masters” - a live performance of blues, swing, and soul with award winning vocalists Jamie Davis and Clairdee on Friday, September 2 at the Robert Z Hawkins Amphitheatre in Reno, NV, and Saturday, September 3rd, at Sand Harbor State Park on the edge of Lake Tahoe’s north shore.

Tickets for Music of the Masters can be purchased on line at RenoJazzOrchestra.org. These family-friendly two-hour concerts start at 7:30 p.m.

It’s a big day for the stage in Carson City. Q&D Construction and Carson City Public Works will join #CarsonProud for a public meeting Monday, 3 p.m. giving an update on construction of the downtown corridor project.

Interested citizens can meet with the contractor, ask questions and walk the construction site. Organizers made some changes to the schedule and they will share them at the meeting. CarsonProud will also post a video of this meeting if residents can't attend.

Deb Kytle welcomed a few dozen supporters Thursday night with a hug and a warm smile as she celebrated the grand opening of her business's new location in Carson City's historic west side neighborhood.

A crowd of guests lingered on the outside patio and milled about inside the 1,500 square-foot cottage-style dwelling located at 1203 N. Nevada Street.

Toni Thompson has long had a love for the American West and its history. It shows both in the decor of her retail store and in the building she rents.

Thompson, owner of Eagle Mountain Trading Post at 110 S. Curry Street in Carson City, said she couldn't be happier running her business out of the historic structure that once served as a freight depot, livery and Overland Stage stop back in the early days of the Nevada state capital.

The public is invited to celebrate the new home of Chi Skin Care and Massage, now located at 1203 N. Nevada Street in Carson City, with an open house celebration Thursday, May 19, beginning at 4 p.m.

Owner Deb Kytle said she couldn't be more pleased with the new space, a quaint residential building on Carson City's historic west side that nicely accommodates the needs of her business's skin treatment and massage therapy services.

"I just fell in love with the place," she said.
