What Works: You can go it alone. But why?
Submitted by editor on Tue, 01/17/2017 - 1:46pmOne of the myths of the hard-working entrepreneur is they are alone. You hear about solopreneurs battling it out alone. You hear the challenges of being the only employee doing it all in a startup. You may even know or be an intrapreneur who is trying to get an idea pushed through alone. Here’s my big question for you this week. Why are you alone?

What Works: Preparedness vs. Complacency
Submitted by editor on Mon, 01/09/2017 - 1:05pmThe recent flooding was devastating for some, inconvenient for others. What was the difference? Of course, flood zoning played a large role. But even those in flood areas were better off because of a single mindset, preparedness.
I was personally impressed by the local response.

The new year is filled with so much hope, promise, and delight. Yet, I was disappointed when I opened Facebook the other day and one person stated that 2017 is already proving to be just like 2016 for them.

What Works: Celebrity deaths wake us up to our own mortality
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/27/2016 - 2:51pmNo one makes it out of life alive. Sadly, it’s a fact. We all know it. But when celebrities from some of the best times of our lives pass, like today’s passing of Carrie Fisher, we come together with a collective sigh. We are human. Our icons are passing. Gene Wilder, George Michael, Prince, and David Bowie have all passed this year. We are all collectively conscious of the impermanence of life.

What Works: Be Present
Submitted by editor on Wed, 12/21/2016 - 12:07pmIn the hustle and bustle of getting presents bought, healing from a respiratory infection, and doing everything else that makes the holidays merry and bright, I drew an absolute blank for a topic for my column until last night. It wasn’t until I met with a client of mine that I got served up some of my own gravy. She said, "be present."

Classes Offered: Gentle Movement, Meditations for Opening the Heart
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/13/2016 - 4:19pmBeginning Dec. 19, Deborah Stevenson offers a refreshing, new class, featuring simple movements and guided meditations done sitting in a chair.
This form, called Sheng Zhen Qigong, is suitable for beginners who have an interest in meditation but "can't sit still." More advanced meditators will find it adds a whole new dimension to their experience, for it closely parallels lovingkindness practice. Its purpose is to open and purify the heart. Sheng Zhen means unconditional love.
What Works: The Power of Focus
Submitted by editor on Mon, 12/12/2016 - 1:19pmI used to pride myself on being a generalist. Being a Jane of all trades was a darn good survival mechanism when I was trying to make ends meet. I could do a little writing here. A little consulting here. And, believe me, I would consult on anything. I found comfort in this kitchen sink approach to life.
Wednesday, Dec. 7: Things to do in Carson City
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Tue, 12/06/2016 - 10:58pm75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.
