A two percent (2%) gross receipts tax is estimated to cost Nevada 9,000 jobs and will make Nevada one of the highest corporate tax states in the country. Equivalent to ~15% corporate income tax (CA has 8.8% corporate income tax).

Consumers will pay this tax through the increased cost of goods and services we purchase, things like Gas, Milk and Childcare.

Nevada Artists Association Spring Art Show winners announced

Signups begin for June 11-12 Carson River Watershed Bus Tour

The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a two-day bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 11-12, 2014. The Carson River Watershed “Get on the Bus Tour” will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, CA to the terminus at the Carson Sink near Fallon.

2014 Carson City Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt begins today

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission is holding its 5th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning today, Thursday, May 1, through May 28, 2014.

The adult scavenger hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural features, all within in the historic district, and the kids scavenger hunt will consist of 20 historic features within a smaller area. The contest will run from May 1 to May 28.

Sausage Factory in Carson City to raffle off new barbecue

So the big game tag application deadline came and went and you somehow forgot to get your application in. Or you applied for your hunts but you’re always looking for other opportunities. If either of these scenarios hits home for you, we would like to direct your attention to the Nevada Dream Tag.

The Nevada Dream Tags Program is a raffle that allows resident and nonresident sportsmen a chance at the hunt of a lifetime while also contributing to Nevada’s wildlife habitat. The tags are similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a lifetime” tags.

Awareness campaign, website connects Nevadans to vaccine resources

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that vaccinations will prevent more than 21 million hospitalizations and 732,000 deaths among children born in the last 20 years.

This week is National Infant Immunization Week, an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs to promote healthy communities.

22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday, May 10

Saturday, May 10 is the 22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation and helps local food banks to restock their supplies in preparation for the summer.

All donations collected in Carson City stay here, benefitting FISH, Ron Wood Resource Center and the Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Carson City high school students win big at National History Day regional competition

Ten Carson High School sophomores took home first place awards Saturday at the regional competition for National History Day at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Of the 15 entries from Nicole Fagundes’ Honors World History class, 12 received honors, including six first place entries that advance to the national competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

Ten-digit dialing for customers in 702 area code mandatory beginning May 3

Las Vegas, Nev. – A new dialing procedure for telephone customers within the existing Southern Nevada 702 area code becomes mandatory next week.

Beginning May 3, customers must dial 10 digits — the area code plus the telephone number — for all local calls. Callers who dial seven digits will receive a recorded message instructing them to dial 10 digits.

Cute bear cub left at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care gets happy in new video

Remember this little bear cub brought to the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care a few days ago? She's since been named "Tahoe" and continues to do well, seeming pretty contented in her surroundings, according to those taking care of her.

NEA announces $768,500 in arts funding for Nevada

The National Endowment for the Arts will award $768,500 in grants to the Nevada Arts Council, the Western Folklife Center, the Churchill Arts Council and the Nevada Ballet Theater as part of the second half of NEA’s fiscal year 2014 funding, Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced Thursday.

The NAC was awarded $663,500 for the third year of its Partnership Agreement Grant, which supports the agency’s programs, outreach activities and various grant categories.

Public safety tops the list of Lyon County expenditures

Lyon County Manager Jeff Page presented a State of the County report to the Lyon County Board of Commissioners at its Thursday meeting. Public safety tops the list of where 2014 general fund money is being spent, making up 42 percent, followed by general government expenditures, Lyon County judicial courts, culture and recreation and public works.

Five pound bear cub greeted at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

A 5.4 pound bear cub is the newest guest at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. The female, about 10 weeks old, was dropped off at the front door of the Bear League without a note or any word on where the bear came from or where her mother may be.

The cub is just learning to walk, but according to LTWC, she doesn't quite have the hang of it. They say her overall condition is good and she is eating pretty well, even with being so young.

Nevada Increases Election Performance Score

Carson City – Nevada is one of only seven states to raise its overall Election Performance Index average by more than 10 percentage points, and is the most improved in the nation in the rate of military and overseas ballots returned, according to the PEW Charitable Trusts’ EPI study released today. Nevada’s performance ranking leaped from 22nd to 5th between the 2008 and 2012 elections, putting it in the top 10 percent of states.

Fiber-optic cable mishap causes statewide Nevada DMV outage

The Nevada Division of Motor Vehicles was unable to process any driver license transactions Tuesday afternoon. According to its website, a fiber-optic cable cut has left the department unable to perform national record checks.

The outage includes new licenses, instruction permits and driver authorization cards, renewals and similar transactions such as reinstatements.

Drive tests and vehicle transactions are unaffected.
