Nevada Lore Series: Walker Lake's famed sea monster, Cecil the Serpent

Legend tells of a terrifying monster that is supposed to reside in the depths of Walker Lake who has been sighted for centuries. For years, Cecil even had his own float in the Nevada Day Parade.

The legend of Cecil seems to have been first written down in the early-to-mid 1800s, when Nevada was first being explored by white settlers looking to spread out and maybe try their hand at finding gold or homesteading.

Reno’s Rajan Zed to open both North Dakota Senate & House with Hindu prayers in February

Both North Dakota House of Representatives and Senate in Bismarck will open their February 21 and 22 sessions respectively with Hindu mantras, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Reno based Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the North Dakota Senate and House. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English interpretation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Bethlehem Lutheran School announces Geography Bee winner

Nathan Tack, a sixth grader, defended his title from last year and won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee on Dec. 20, 2018.

Nevada is home to more than 3 million people, ranking it as the fastest growing state in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's national and state population estimates released last week.

Veterans, fallen military honored with Christmas wreaths at Lone Mountain Cemetery

More than 1,700 fallen military and veterans laid to rest at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City were honored Saturday morning with decorative Christmas wreaths placed on their graves by dozens of volunteers.

Carson City Sheriff: Suspect in IHOP burglary in custody; drugs and jewelry found in search

A suspect who went into Carson City IHOP late Thursday night, knocked over the cash register and took money from the till was located and taken into custody for his alleged connection to the crime, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Andrew, better known as Andy, was born on his family’s ranch in Yerington, Nevada. He was the fourth of five children of Albert “Burr” and Marion, including Al, Fred, Madeline and Mary Lou.

Andy enjoyed his upbringing in Yerington, making friends, working on ranches, playing football, excelling in scholastics and having more than his share of fun. His accolades from high school included being elected Governor of Boys State and later being inducted into the Yerington High Football Hall of Fame.
