Events and happenings around Carson City for Monday, Nov. 26
Good morning Carson City and welcome to the first day of the working week and the last week of November. It is Monday, Nov. 26, 2018. For those keeping score, there are 29 days left until Christmas. Were you able to get some of your holiday shopping done this weekend? You've got plenty of time this week to pick up good bargains, though it will be somewhat soggy outside. A series of winter storms will push through the Sierra and Carson City region this week.
Do you have an event or happening you'd like people to know about? Tell us about it by clicking here, filling out the details and we'll tell Carson City area readers about your event or happening. You can also submit the relevant information, also known as the "5Ws and How” to editor@carsonow.org.
Here's what's happening today:
— Browsers Corner Holiday Bazaar. 9:30 a.m. Great gift ideas, decorations, books and more available at the Carson City Friends of the Library bookstore at 711 East Washington Street.
— Blood Drive in Dayton to honor the memory of Don Carbery. 10 a.m. To celebrate and honor the memory of Don Carbery, who volunteered extensively with many projects to help others throughout Nevada and in places across the U.S., Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is welcoming a blood drive by Vitalant. The blood drive takes place at Healthy Communities’ offices at 209 Dayton Valley Road, Dayton, Nevada on Monday, Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. You can also make a your life-saving appointment by calling Alisha Moss at Healthy Communities at (775) 246-7550, or by going to BloodHero.com and using sponsor code N1DHC.
— FISH executive director to be Dems' luncheon speaker. 11:30 a.m. Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends In Services Helping (FISH), will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Rural Northern Nevada’s largest and most complete social services program, FISH provides food, clothing, shelter and medical aid to the homeless, hungry and underemployed within our community, with the objective of helping families and individuals become self-sufficient. FISH is currently conducting an online food drive. It became necessary because the annual postal drive only brought in about a quarter of the usual donations. Peckham is asking the community to go online and donate 20 to 100 dollars. Those funds will be put to good use, as FISH can acquire food at a third of what the public pays. A little goes a very long way. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table Pizza, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. All are welcome.
— High Sierra Swing Dance Club weekly West Coast swing dance lessons. 5:30 p.m. Come join us every Monday evening at Carson Lanes, 4400 Snyder Ave, 775-883-2606, for a friendly, casual, fun night of dancing to DJ music: West Coast Swing, Country 2step, Nigh Club, and even a few latin tunes. No partner needed. Beginner lessons 5:30 pm, Intermediate lessons 6:30 pm, $8 each, free open dancing 7:30 to 10:00pm. For more information about this event or our club call Idie: 775-443-8870.
— Carson City Cultural Commission to host November meeting, introducing two newest members. 5:30 p.m. The Carson City Cultural Commission will introduce its newest board members on Monday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center. Mylo McCormick and Christopher Leyva are the two newest board members, appointed by the Board of Supervisors on October 4. In addition, the meeting will discuss a Carson High Senior Project, a presentation by Kim Harris of the Dangberg Ranch and Historic Park, and more.
ONGOING:
— Signups underway for Dec. 1 Carson City's Holiday with a Hero Holiday Crawl. Carson City's Holiday with a Hero announced Wednesday that its annual Holiday Crawl through downtown Carson City will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 10 p.m. The Holiday with a Hero committee hosts the Holiday Crawl, a festive pub crawl through downtown bars, to raise money for the annual shopping spree for children who classify as homeless in Carson City. The Holiday Crawl draws hundreds annually who walk through downtown Carson City, taking in entertainment from talented local bands and artists, including Bootleg, Eross, Jimmy V Music (Jimmy VanDeuson II), Athena McIntyre, and Gary Wheeler, as well as enjoying food and beverages offered at local bars.
In past years, Holiday with a Hero donations annually have benefited approximately 300 children living in cars, campgrounds, motels or shared spaces, and are part of the Carson City School District McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program.
All proceeds go to Holiday with a Hero, the annual drive by local law enforcement, firefighters, military service members and others to provide a Christmas shopping trip for underprivileged schoolchildren (kindergarten through eighth grade). Each child receives a $100 Walmart gift card to shop with their leader. The Carson City Fire Department, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Department of Corrections and several other local organizations provide volunteers for the event. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, also donations are welcome. Check-in is 4 p.m. in Downtown Carson City at the Studio 177 W Proctor St. More information can be found at www.HolidayWithAHero.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram. Must be 21-year-old to participate. Following the link here: http://bit.ly/HolidayCrawlCarson to sign up and purchase your tickets for the Holiday Crawl.
— Tiffani and Bailee's 6th Sealed Toy Drive underway now through Dec. 9, drop off boxes throughout Carson City. Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those of you who didn't know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people.
