The area is not easily accessible. Hot Shots were dropped onto the hills nearby to fight the fire as well as drops from three air tankers and two helicopters. Hand crews will stay on the fire during the night.

Jobseekers warned of fraudulent job posting scam

Nevada JobConnect is warning jobseekers to beware of a Craig’s List scam in which two Northern Nevada customers recently fell victim.

An advertisement on Craig’s List requested jobseekers purchase Wal-Mart gift cards for $70 to pay for OSHA training for a job. Clients were told to go to the Reno or Sparks JobConnect where they would supposedly receive OSHA training to qualify for the job. However, no such training or job opportunity exists, said Renee Olson, administrator for the Employment Security Division of Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Elaine and I recently returned from an interesting, three-day, two-night visit to Elko, way over in Northeastern Nevada. We are both members of the Board of Directors of the Nevada Operation Game Thief (OGT) Citizens Board.

That OGT Citizens Board has been in existence since 1987, and it is the small, private group that pays rewards for information that leads to the conviction of poachers of Nevada's wildlife.

    Carson High School Uniform Debate

Why am I opposed to school uniforms at Carson High School? It’s a lengthy answer and so I’ll try to condense it. We live in a small town, with limited selection to stores. We have Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenny, and Kohl’s. We have access, in Reno, to those listed plus several more, but only a fraction of the stores that you would have in a big city. My daughter has been in the current SSA “uniforms” at the middle school for the last 2 years. Additionally I have a buying background in the fashion industry for 8 years, so I have that perspective to my argument as well.

As a special tip you would be well advised to purchase that new license ASAP, because if you forget, go fishing and get checked by “The Friendly Old Game Warden,” he isn’t going to be very happy nor will you.

First Step to Avoid the Fiscal Cliff: Close Offshore Tax Loopholes

With Congress scrambling to agree on ways to reduce the deficit, USPIRG released a fact sheet to point out a clear first step to avoid the “fiscal cliff”: closing offshore tax loopholes.

Many of America’s largest corporations and wealthiest individuals use accounting gimmicks to shift profits made in America to offshore tax havens, where they pay little to no taxes. This tax avoidance costs the federal government $150 billion in tax revenue each year. USPIRG released new data illustrating the size of this loss with 16 dramatic ways the public could benefit from those lost funds.

Man allegedly steals donuts and taquitos, runs, gets tased

At approximately 2 a.m. Friday, a Carson City Sherrif's deputy was dispatched to attend to a report of larceny, with the subjects - an 18-year-old Carson City man and a 25-year-old Carson City architecht - last seen heading east toward the north Wal-Mart on Market Street.

When the deputy arrived he sighted two men matching the description of the two larceny suspects sharing a large beer outside the west entrance of Wal-Mart. When the deputy stopped to ask the men what they were doing, the younger of the two attempted to escape.

    Carson City heroes save Christmas

Question: What do Santa, a clown, a platoon of police officers, and coffee have in common?

Answer: They were all at the Wal-Mart service center Friday morning.

The second day of the seventh-annual Holiday With a Hero shopping spree event kicked off at 9 a.m., with the volunteers being fed donuts and coffee. Santa and his Wal-Mart helpers stood prepped to welcome less-fortunate children and help pair them off with volunteers, who would help them spend their complimentary Wal-Mart gift cards.

Holiday With a Hero, Day 1

Sheriff's officers, state troopers, National Guardsmen, and a plethora of other volunteers - and their charges - middle and high school students in need of a Christmas - converged at Wal-Mart at 9 p.m. Wednesday morning for the annual Holiday with a Hero event.

With 280 low-income students to help, this year's shopping spree had to be broken up into two groups - one of middle and high school students, and one of elementary school students - spread out over two days.
