New Bike Rack at Curry and Proctor Streets

With the great restaurants, brewery, and almost nightly entertainment downtown, bicycle parking is in high demand along Curry Street in Carson City. It’s not uncommon to see bikes locked to lamp posts, trash cans, and anything else solid people can find. To help alleviate the bike parking problem, Muscle Powered has installed a bike rack at Curry and Proctor Streets.

Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest 2012 has announced the winners of its Show and Shine, held on June 30 in downtown Carson City. A great day was had by all – the weather cooperated – and people strolled among the beautiful vehicles and chatted with the owners and restorers. The CCSO 9th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge attracted a dedicated crowd who watched all the competitors and cheered their favorites on to victory in all the competitions – Continuous Ride, Slow Ride, Team Ride, and the spectacular Last Man Standing.

Carson City Airport "Capital Wings" open house

Carson City Airport "Capital Wings" Open House - 8 a.m. till 3 p.m. FREE to the public. The Open House takes place at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. Activities include flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, plane and hot air balloon rides, food and beverages in a day filled with family activities.

Proceeds raised through raffle and t-shirt sales will be donated to local area non-profit organizations. The event kicks off at 8:00 A.M. with a pancake breakfast provided by Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).

Lake Tahoe prepares itself for multiple fireworks celebrations

The Lake Tahoe region will celebrates Independence Day holiday with multiple fireworks displays from virtually all points, with the first show set to kick off July 3.

“North Lake Tahoe is unique in that we have a series of fireworks events held throughout the region,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “Visitors to the area can take their pick in terms of when and where or enjoy more than one show during their stay.”

Nevada State Democratic Convention Convenes in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Six-hundred or so of the state’s Democratic party faithful this morning attended their annual state convention at the Bally’s Hotel conference center in Las Vegas. Five-hundred sixty-two delegates were credentialed but about two dozen vendors lined both sides of the room and guests were also welcomed.

Tahoe City Visitor Center to be unveiled June 12

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association proudly unveils its new Visitor Information Center with a special Grand Opening Ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, 4-8 p.m. The pedestrian-friendly venue is located on the ground floor of the association’s headquarters at 100 North Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City, next to Fanny Bridge.

North Tahoe to host Mountain Travel Symposium April 15-21

North Lake Tahoe is gearing up to host the 37th Annual Mountain Travel Symposium, one of the world’s premier ski industry wholesale conferences, April 15-21 at the Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley, Calif. This is the second time North Lake Tahoe has been the designated conference host, having held the event with its 1,200 attendees back in 2006.

Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous dates set

The first Lake Tahoe Motorcycle Adventure Ride and Rendezvous is slated for August 23-26 on the beautiful South Shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe South). The event includes both off road and pavement rides, evening social events, entertainment, guest speakers, vendors and Tahoe summer activities. The event welcomes all makes of bikes and riders.

March 17, 2012 is the world famous Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry. Anyone who wishes to sign up to cook will be given 40 pounds of beef "fries" as part of their $100 application/permit fee. This event takes place on St. Patricks day so there will also be a fun parade at noon. Craft vendors, non profits and local companies are also invited to purchase a booth space.

Paradise Lost: Restaurant in Carson Mall closes

Over the weekend, the Paradise Cove Cafe in Carson Mall closed its doors, the end to a labor of love for owners Doug and Jamesa Cramer.

"Relieved" was the first word Doug said when I asked him how he was doing. The efforts to keep the restaurant in business over the last year and 10 months had clearly taken a toll.

Students speak out in support of professor Tom Kubistant, whose human sexuality class has come under fire after a complaint by a student. They contradict Karen Royce's claim that they were required to masturbate. An independent investigator ruled that Royce's complaint was unfounded. For her part, Royce says she feels vilified for speaking out, and may appeal. Ron Knecht, member of the state Board of Regents and former Republican Assemblyman, says he's investigating this class, too, and feels it might cross the line between education and therapy.

Outdoors with Don Q: Memories from an unforgettable six week adventure

Bob and Lorraine (my cousin) Scholes of Dayton plus Elaine and I just returned from a six week vacation trip to Italy, Sicily and Switzerland. It was the Scholes’ second trip to Italy and our first-ever trip.
Lorraine’s father was born in Ponte Buggianese and my Dad was born in Lucca, and we both wanted to visit where our roots began.
We left on August 30, flew from Reno to Denver to Montreal to Rome and then returned from Rome to Zurich to San Francisco to Reno on October 12. Here are a bunch of our memories:
