Nevada selected for prestigious poet and fiction writers competition in New York

Nevada poets and fiction writers have a unique new opportunity to express themselves and compete for an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to meet with top literary professionals, including editors, agents, publishers, and prominent writers. Poets & Writers, the nation's largest nonprofit organization serving creative writers, has selected Nevada as the only state to participate in its annual Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award program.

Carson City teen kayak phenom wins prestigious Female Paddler of the Year award

Despite being nearly half the size and half the age of many of the women who are her inspiration and mentors, 14-year-old Sage Donnelly of Carson City has gone big time, winning this year’s prestigious Female Paddler of the Year Award, presented by Canoe and Kayak magazine.

The Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival presents Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland in concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez celebrates Nevada homecoming with Carson City visit

Recently crowned Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez spent Wednesday in Carson City, the first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada. She was crowned June 8.

Sanchez was officially greeted into the city by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Carson City Visitors Bureau Director Joel Dunn, Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members and the Carson High School Senators cheerleading team.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez to celebrate official Nevada homecoming

Newly crowned Miss USA 2014, Nia Sanchez, will return to her home state of Nevada for her official homecoming trip Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20. This will be Sanchez’s first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada since she was crowned on Sunday, June 8.

Miss USA’s homecoming will kick off with a visit to the state’s capital, Carson City. Sanchez will have the opportunity to meet several government officials while visiting the historic Nevada State Capitol.

Thunderstorms possible through the afternoon and early evening

UPDATE: Thunderstorms were developing this afternoon east of Dayton and north of Virginia City toward Reno, according to the National Weather Service.

At 4:05 p.m. the weather service issued a flash flood warning for north central Storey County and south central Washoe County. The storm was said to be producing torrential rainfall of three inches ore more in one hour, according to a weather service bulletin. The storm was located south of Interstate 80 near USA Parkway.

Charter brings 150 HD channels, improved all-digital network to Carson City, Lyon, Storey county customers

Charter Communications in Carson City will soon enjoy access to more than 150 high definition (HD) channels as part of an all-digital upgrade.

On December 3, Charter will clear all analog signals from its local network, making way to add more than 120 new HD channels in Carson City and neighboring Storey and Lyon counties. Customers will have access to more than 150 HD channels once Charter completes its move to an all-digital network.

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC Brings WSHL Junior Hockey Team to South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC announced today that newly formed Lake Tahoe Blue will play their inaugural Junior A hockey season at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena as part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL). League preseason games start September 20 and the regular season starts October 4.
