USNS Carson City passes muster, artist rendering presented to Gov. Sandoval

The USNS Carson City, the US Navy’s newest Expeditionary Fast Transport Vehicle christened in January, completed acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico this week. The Carson City will be formally turned over the US Navy on June 24, 2016.

Nevada Department of Transportation breaks ground on USA Parkway extension project

Western Nevada College students launch club soccer program

Western Nevada College is kicking it up a notch to expand campus activities by introducing club soccer teams to the college beginning in Fall 2016, officials announced Thursday.

The program will be directed by the Associated Students of Western Nevada, with support from Student Life, and will be open to all students. Both men’s and women’s teams are envisioned. WNC hopes to field soccer teams at several levels of play: Recreational, Competitive and Premier, if interest is strong enough.

Meditation Rooms opened at UNR

“Meditation and Reflection Rooms” formally opened on March 16 at University of Nevada, Reno claimed to be one of the “nation's top public research universities”.

These “Meditation and Reflection Rooms” feature two individual rooms and a larger space for reflection, meditation and prayer. It includes various cabinets where each group can keep their required religious icons and articles locked to be brought out when needed by individuals.

Senator Square: CHS students bring home top honors at speech and debate tourney

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Senator Square: Holiday craft fair this week, plus culinary teams up for Pie to the Rescue

The Carson High School Craft Fair coming this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21. Hundreds of crafters from all over Nevada and Northern California will fill both gymnasiums and halls of CHS. All money raised from the craft fair is donated to the various student clubs and organizations at CHS. Come support this annual tradition. Santa will also be on hand for photos.

JoAnne Skelly: The Aging Apple Tree

Last week I spoke with Cory, The Greenhouse Project manager about aging apple trees at his house that an arborist suggested he cut down and replace with dwarf varieties.

Although the apples have always been fruitful, the arborist thinks these trees are almost at the end of their productive years. Cutting down these old, yet healthy, trees may be acceptable from the standpoint of apple production, but since they also serve as shade trees, they would be a great loss in the overall landscape.

2016 Amgen Tour of California returns to Lake Tahoe for men, women stage races

Amgen Tour of California, presented by AEG, announced Thursday that professional cyclists return to Lake Tahoe for the men’s Stage 5 finish, as well as the women’s Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.

International buyers to attend Nevada Governor’s Global Tourism Summit in November

Creating solid business development opportunities within the lucrative international travel market is the focus of the Governor’s Global Tourism Summit, Nov. 16-17 at Hilton Lake Las Vegas.
