A community that shares is a community that cares. Capital City residents, known to go above and beyond in their generosity during the holiday season, are invited to participate in this Friday's 22nd annual Carson City Turkey Drop hosted by the Salvation Army, Max Casino and KKFT 99.1.

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Also ahead, Carson City's GOP will host a discussion with several political leaders representing the capital city. There will be a 'Glorious Expanse' artist reception at WNC Gallery, plus library activities and more.

This past Sunday, I was asked to speak briefly at Unity of the Sierra about a free gratitude group I run on Facebook. Anyone can request to join by going here. Gratitude is a practice many become just a little more aware of in November. After all, it’s the month of Thanksgiving. However, did you know that gratitude is scientifically proven to create joy and abundance?

With Western Nevada and Sierra finally seeing some rain and snow showers, weather forecasters say more may be on the way next week through the Thanksgiving holiday period.

During the cold winter months in a pocket of the capital city, a bit of magic is sprinkled about on the historic rail that once transported gold from Virginia City to the mint in Carson City, but now transports elves, hot cocoa, and silver bells for a few special weeks each year.

Hello fellow anglers. This time of year, I personally wish that it would stay daylight savings time. The morning we had the time change, Tom Blotter and I decided to venture up to Frenchman’s Lake for a little fishing activity. We had a long discussion on what would be the right time to meet in the morning to leave. Would it be 3 AM new time or 4 PM old time.  We left at 4 AM and got there in total darkness not prepared, I did not bring a flash light or a head light. Quite comically we prepped the boat using the light from our phones, then waited until we had enough light to safely launch. We fished until 2 pm to make sure we got home before dark.

The Wolf Pack community can help the University of Nevada, Reno transform lives by donating blood this Thanksgiving season. The blood drive, brought to campus by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada and Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 27. There are four locations, all taking blood on this day; no appointments necessary.

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. Local events Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 include an Eagle Valley Middle School expansion plan community meeting, "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a Little Valley fire re-seeding gathering, a Toys for Tots volunteer orientation meeting, art showings, classes and more.

Heading into Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019 activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Leave No Trace hike and, later, a full moon hike hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec, a Carson City School District board meeting, the monthly gathering of the Carson Fly Fishing Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

The annual High Five Turkey Drive is happening this Thursday in Carson City. Join Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, for its collection of Thanksgiving turkeys in time for the holiday.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

The Salvation Army in Carson City will hold a job fair on this Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Salvation Army will be hiring seasonal workers to help with their holiday programs such as Thanksgiving food drives, Christmas food drives and Angel Tree Christmas toy distribution.

Heading into the last day of October and you know what that means: Happy Halloween! Best to bundle up under the costumes as Thursday will be another chilly day, though warmer than Wednesday. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Friday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating.
