"The Eagle," an action period film of roughly 180 A.D., currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is that rarity of a Roman legions movies that has no love interest, and barely any women in the cast. There's also a lot of flashy scenes that have nothing to add to the story as well as a lot of ankle-height shots showing troops or horses or somebody moving along. Honest.

For more than a year, the lack of firm details about the Nugget Project has been a major source of frustration to those trying to get their heads around this undertaking.

Without real numbers or plans, those arguing for or against struggled with hitting the moving target that is this project.

But that target just got a whole lot more stationary, as Carson City Manager Larry Werner released a 100+ page feasibility report (attached below) for the Board of Supervisors to use this week when a decision is made on whether to move forward with the project.

About 3.5 miles of frontage that amounts to 419 acres along the Carson River corridor was sealed into protection thanks to the voter-approved Question 1 initiative and Carson City's own Question 18 Quality of Life Initiative.

A partnership for the purchase, appraised at $3.1 million, was created between Carson City, the Nevada Land Conservancy, the Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway and private landowner John Serpa.

A 33-year-old Carson City man faces child abuse and domestic battery charges after allegedly slapping and flicking his 2-year-old son in the face inside Walmart and then, according to witnesses, hitting the child with a stick outside the store.

Authorities arrested Bruce Scott, 33, at about 1 p.m. on Jan. 21 after witnesses stated they saw him hit the child multiple times. Surveillance video from the Market Street store was collected in the investigation.

Carl Kuhl, a state Parole and Probation employee of six years, has created a plan that he claims will eliminate Nevada's budget deficit within two years.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, Kuhl said his plan not only will reduce the budget deficit but also help repair Nevada's economy at the same time. It is a pretty big claim, he admits, coming from an Accounting Assistant I, an entry level position.

Dear Editor: Once again the Dayton community has come together and made a difference for so many families during the holidays.

The Dayton toy drive received applications for over 650 kids this year and we were quite concerned that there would not be enough to go around. Fortunately a large, eager, group of volunteers came together who were quick to get down to business and get the donations and interest pouring in. It wasn’t long before businesses, as well as community organizations and individuals were giving.

On Saturday, Jan. 22 only, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate from Sutro Elementary School at 190 Dayton Village Parkway from noon until 4 p.m.

Sutro Elementary School offered an indoor venue for the pantry on January 22 so that people can come in out of the cold January weather.

Violence on Sunday that led to near-tragedy ended today with the arrest of a 17-year-old Carson City boy. The incident is a reminder of how fragile children can be and how early intervention can prevent something like this from happening again.

CARSON CITY – Despite a dramatic slowdown in Nevada’s population growth, and even some net out-migration for the first time in recent memory, the U.S. Census Bureau report today shows the state will gain a fourth congressional seat in 2013.

Geothermal Development Associates of Reno received the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Achievement Certificate today.

The award recognizes businesses that have achieved significant success in the global marketplace and have also benefited from the programs and assistance of the International Trade Administration’s U.S. Commercial Service. Chuck Alvey, president/CEO for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada made the presentation.

This post is kind of late, considering the state Christmas tree was lit over a week ago. But, I have no excuses. I’m not too happy with the pictures because they came from my iPhone, but there was no way I was going to drag around the big camera while I also had both kids with me, so oh well. A Dayton man faces multiple drug charges and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Ian Miles Lister, 33, was arrested in the 400 block of Saliman Road in Carson City at around 5:30 this morning after an officer spotted his vehicle committing several traffic violations.

Lister provided his license to the officer but was unable to provide proof of insurance or his vehicle registration. Dispatch informed the officer that his license had been revoked, according to the arrest report.

A handful of Lake Tahoe ski resorts prepare to open for the season this weekend thanks to an early snowfall, snowmaking guns and a fairly large storm set to punch the Sierra.

Around a foot or more of natural snow across the Sierra earlier this month certainly helped get things moving. With this weekend's anticipated storm, which may bring anywhere from 2-4 feet of snow to the Sierra, resorts should get a nice healthy boost just in time for the holiday season.

The Dayton Food Pantry is truly a community-owned project. So many Dayton area individuals and groups from every part of the town contribute to keep the Dayton Food Pantry going. Among those pitching in to help is the local theatre group, The Misfits.

Rarely has a Nevada senatorial race received the nationwide attention this year’s has. Of course, there’s the old pro versus the new pro — Harry Reid and Sharron Angle. Both have been around the barn a number of times, she in the Nevada Legislature and Harry in all kinds of jobs, most currently, of course, Senate majority leader.

Seems a lot of Nevadans are unhappy with Harry, mostly because he is now an insider, carrying out President Obama’s programs as any majority leader would be forced to do if it’s his party in the White House.

United Airlines will offer daily non-stop flights to Houston beginning in February, Reno-Tahoe International Airport officials announced Thursday.

“This is tremendous news for the community,” said Krys Bart, president and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. “We couldn’t be happier to have the return of this outstanding service that offers travelers the ease of connections not only to the east, but to South America and beyond.”

Construction near the intersection of Northridge Drive and Russell Way in Carson City prompted a Carson Now reader to ask what kind of work is being done in the area.

The reader writes: "What is going on with the protected wetlands area north of Northridge Street between the freeway to the east and behind the houses on Eastridge to the west? It looks like they are trying to fill it in with dirt with the equipment that arrived this morning. All public access was closed off as of Monday. Please investigate and report."

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to operate the Arlington Square Ice Rink for another season at the board's Oct. 7 meeting.

According to the staff summary, "This request is to expend $192,730 from the General Fund to support the operations of the Arlington Square Ice Rink for the 2010-2011 season. Staff is estimating that the ice skating rink will bring in $86,475; therefore the net subsidy will be $106,255."

Carson City Animal Services received a makeover on Saturday thanks to more than two dozen volunteers.

Through the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class 2010, this top dog group put up fences, pounded nails and laid down coats of paint, sprucing up the Butti Way animal shelter.

With 17 Leadership Carson City class members present and student volunteers from Western Nevada College, the overhaul is designed to revamp the adoption area by adding new fences, outdoor furniture and dog-friendly shelters.

The Reno-Gazette Journal, KTVN Channel 2 Reno and even CNN reports Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons was thrown from a horse on Tuesday afternoon north of Pyramid Lake and is hospitalized at Renown Medical Center in Reno. He is said to be resting and was alert when he spoke with staff.

Update 8:40 a.m.: We talked to the governor's office, and they said Gibbons is still at Renown Medical Center, and is listed in stable condition.
Update 1:30 p.m.: According to a press statement released by the governor's staff, Gibbons broke his pelvis in at least two places. He will have surgery today.
His surgeon says this type of injury is very common when someone is thrown from a horse. His doctors say his prognosis is very good and his injuries are non-life threatening and non-life altering.
Update 9:30 p.m.: Gov. Gibbons has undergone surgery and is recuperating in the hospital.  The Governor’s pelvis was broken in several places. The surgery lasted approximately two hours. The doctor who performed the surgery noted he expects the Governor to make a full recovery.

Friday night shined in all shapes, sizes and hearts for McKenna Mitchell, a Carson City teen stricken with bone cancer. While McKenna wasn't able to attend because of chemotherapy treatments, Carson City put on a car show the 14-year-old girl would be proud of. The event was held at Kragen-O'Reilly's.

There were 66 entries in the Show and Shine, with all proceeds going to help McKenna's family with medical costs, according to organizers Holly and Kenson Seymour.
