The Carson High School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Brian Fox, traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend to participate in a regional music festival sponsored by Forum Music Festivals.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

The list of local students who received scholarships were announced at the Salute to Scholars Program. Listed below are the students; congratulations!

What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Enjoy.

Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present two Hassler & Company concerts this spring on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 4, at 4 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Director is Gary Schwartz. Admission is free, donations welcome.

Zephyrus Brass Quintet will perform in the Expresso Yourself Café at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W King Street, Carson City, on Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. The live music is part of the Carson City Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, to be held that day from 1 to 5 p.m.

Hello Carson City. We're heading into Sunday, April 28, 2019 with another fabulous Spring day ahead with highs in the low 70s. Events lined up include a cancer center benefit bow shoot hosted by Clear Creek Bowmen, a Muscle Powered bike ride, a Bee City USA Earth Week presentation, an open house at the Wungnema House in Mills Park, a Carson City Symphony concert and more. Celebrating its 35th season, the Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, presents a “Family Matters” concert on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. Featured guest soloist, violinist Gregory Maytan, will perform the United States premiere of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, written in 1875 by Swedish composer, Amanda Maier.

We're working our way into Thursday, April 25, 2019 and feeling the warmup around the Carson City region. Winding down our work week we have art, theater and railroad history talks, library presentations, a fitness walk, climate change discussion, back pain wellness workshop, music ensemble at the community center and more. Going solo, regardless the venture, can be a scary thought. Add a violin, a complex classical piece, and an audience of a couple hundred music enthusiasts, and a whole different kind of focus is required.

Such is not a new experience for 2018 Sierra Lutheran High School alumna Aleyna Gilson, who will find the spotlight on her again at the end of this month when she performs Mendelssohn’s concerto in E minor at the Orchestra Concerto Concert at Point Loma Nazarene University, in San Diego.

When selecting a book to highlight this year’s theme for National Library Week, “Libraries = Strong Communities,” it may not seem fitting to pick one about the collapse of modern society. But Amy Lauder, collection development manager for the Carson City Library, argues “Station Eleven” is the optimal choice.

The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April.

Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

The sweeping, intimate and heart-rending drama of Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” will be presented by TOCCATA, Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, April 13-19 with performances in Gardnerville, Incline Village and Reno.

The hills around the Nevada state capital are alive with the sound of music and nature as the Carson City Symphony performs its 200th concert Sunday at the newly renovated Bob Boldrick Theater.

Before that, go on a treasure hunt at one of two marketplaces occurring in Carson City today, including the Flying Pig Flea Market and the Seventh Day Adventist Rummage Sale.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City recently appointed Benjamin Korn as its new Executive Director.

"We were delighted to extend an offer to Mr. Korn because he had extensive fundraising experience as well as an MA in Non Profit Arts Management" says Casey Gilles, Board President. "The museum's Board of Directors felt these two attributes made him an ideal candidate that would chart a new course for the museum involving increased resource development, enhanced constituent engagement, and a focus on revising the museum's collection."

Rosebud's Dance Band and the Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley invite you to attend a Valentine's Dance.

The dance is scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the CVIC Hall, 1604 Esmeralda Avenue in Minden.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Music playing from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Ages 10 and under are free.

There will be a dessert bar, as well as a no-host bar. There will also be a raffle.

Carson City Symphony Association announces the Joyful Noise Carson Children’s Choir will begin Spring Semester rehearsals on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 22, 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Church, 3680 US Highway 395 South in Carson City. Registrations will be accepted until January 29.

TOCCATA, Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents celebrated American violin virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn performing one of the 10 greatest violin concertos of all time. And more than 100 singers and instrumentalists bring you Mendelssohn’s spectacular “Elijah.” Hear the concert at Carson Valley Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Other performances Feb. 9-17 in Incline, South Lake, and Reno.

Students of the Carson Montessori school brought a special holiday treat to a music teacher diagnosed with Parkinson's in the form of a private concert on her lawn.

Ashlyn Parnham, Diana Banuelos Ibarra, and Jasmine Wong-Fortunato were awarded the third annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this month.

The Christmas spirit is very present around Carson City these days with just over two weeks remaining before the big day.

TACH (Traditional Association for Cultural Harmony), a non-profit organization founded by internationally-renowned musician Thakur Chakrapani Singh is going to present “World Music Award Night” on Dec. 16, 2018 at 4 p.m.

Children explored the world of musical instruments Saturday as part of Mother Nature: Nature's Musical Symphony program at the Carson City Library.

The program, featuring Maureen Conlin of Happy Notes, is sponsored by Arts for Children of Nevada.
