All winter I have said, wait to prune your roses. April 15 is time to prune roses. While there are general rose pruning principles, the different types of roses: hybrid teas, floribundas, shrub, climbers, ramblers and miniatures, all have special requirements.

Coding and 3-D modeling camp offered Tuesday and Thursday at Carson City Library

Students can learn coding and 3-D modeling at a camp offered at the Carson City Library over spring break next week. Sixth- through eighth-graders can attend the Tuesday camp while a camp for fourth- and fifth-graders will be held Thursday. Both camps will run 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Digitorium. Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days.

There’s a new and free recreational youth baseball league beginning this spring and summer for boys and girls in Carson City. The Junior Giants, the flagship program of the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, serves more than 25,000 boys and girls in 88 underserved communities throughout northern and central California, Nevada and southern Oregon.

You may consider Muscle Powered a hiking and biking organization, and you wouldn't be wrong. But Muscle Powered's motto is "Walk, Bike, Build," and it is the "Build" part of the motto that is sometimes overlooked. With the official opening of the Ash to Kings Trail last season, the building aspect of Muscle Powered's motto was highlighted. But along with building comes maintaining. Volunteers from Muscle Powered often assist with maintaining the area's trails, cutting back encroaching brush, or building sustainable features into a trail in order to prevent erosion.

Western Nevada College students launch club soccer program

Western Nevada College is kicking it up a notch to expand campus activities by introducing club soccer teams to the college beginning in Fall 2016, officials announced Thursday.

The program will be directed by the Associated Students of Western Nevada, with support from Student Life, and will be open to all students. Both men’s and women’s teams are envisioned. WNC hopes to field soccer teams at several levels of play: Recreational, Competitive and Premier, if interest is strong enough.

January’s finalists in the local Parent-Teacher Student Association Reflections Art Contest at Carson High School put their creative works up against the state’s best for a chance to compete at the National PTA Reflections awards ceremony held this summer.

Focus on Carson - Photography Contest in Progress

The Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition is accepting photographs for “Focus on Carson," a large-scale public art installation. The contest is open to all Carson City residents. The winning 20 to 30 photographs will be displayed as 3-by-5-foot images on a long vinyl mesh banner along a construction-site fence on the Hop & Mae Adams Foundation’s project at Curry and Telegraph Streets during summer 2016.

The Sierra Lutheran basketball program is firing up. This year, both the varsity and JV girls set new school records, along with the JV boys. The Falcons were successful in the classroom, too, because both the girls and boys varsity teams were honored as Nevada Division IV State Academic champions on Feb. 27 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno. The girls team compiled a combined 3.87 grade point average, and the boys a 3.72 grade point average.
