Memorial Day weekend Services, Celebrations, and Events

While many think of Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial kick-off to summer, its true purpose is to remember those who we’ve lost in defense of our country. Here are a few ways to honor our heroes over the next few days:

Stewart projects among those moving forward

The $4.6 million renovation of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Welcome Center was among the items approved Friday by members of the Senate Finance and Assembly Ways and Means committees.

UNLV students sign up for spring cleaning at Stewart Indian School in Carson City

UNLV students taking part in the university’s Alternative Break Program will spend next week at Stewart Indian School in Carson City, completing landscaping and other projects, while also having the opportunity to learn about the historic site and Native American culture.

The Children’s Museum of Carson City hosts a special ‘Step Up For Kids’ event with free admission sponsored by the Children’s Cabinet: it’s a perfect time to learn what resources are offered. Sherry L. Rupert will speak on preserving the Stewart Indian School, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 24, at 10:00 am.

For ninety years, Stewart Indian School fulfilled a federal commitment to pursue Native American education in Nevada. Located three miles southeast of Carson City, the school grounds encompassed 240 acres.

Carson City Parks & Recreation Easy Walk to Stewart Indian School

Meet in the parking lot 5366 Snyder Ave., Carson City. All walks required closed-toed shoes and water. Hat and sunscreen recommended.

Walks of 1 to 2 miles in length with none or negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved and smooth paths. The walks will usually be of approximately 1 hour in duration, depending on the location.

Nevada Tourism grants $895770 for rural tourism promotion

Bi-State Traditional Ecological Knowledge Summit underway at the Stewart Indian School

The Nevada Indian Commission in conjunction with the Bi-State Executive Oversight Committee launched an open open forum Tuesday to discuss the best practices for integrating traditional ecological knowledge into the management of sagebrush and pinyon-juniper ecosystems by federal land agencies.

The event is at the Stewart Indian School Gym in Carson City and runs through Thursday, June 30. Nearly 200 arrived Tuesday for the forum's first day.

Weekend events result in big business for Carson City

The inaugural Carson City Off-Road racing series, part of the Epic Rides mountain biking circuit, was more than successful.

It was epic.

It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Stewart Indian School Father’s Day Powwow 2016: Dancing in the steps of ancestors

As soon as John Rupert, 15, could walk, he started learning the traditional dances of his Native American forefathers.

“We have all my regalia in all different sizes,” said John, the son of a Washoe father and Paiute mother. “I think it’s cool. Not many people can say they go to powwows on the weekends.”

Indian arts, crafts, food and dance take the stage June 17-19 at the 2016 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow in Carson City.

Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Indian School Alumni, the annual powwow includes quality Native American fun and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

Memorial Day 2016 remembrance service in Carson City

Those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States were honored Monday in ceremonies across the country and locally at the Historic Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, the Historic Stewart Indian School Cemetery and Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s.
