Nevada State Archives brown bag lunch Tuesday features reading of 'Christmas in Nevada'
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 12/06/2018 - 5:42pmAuthor Patricia Cafferata will read from "Christmas in Nevada" on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City.
The delightful and touching stories tell how Nevadans have celebrated the holiday, from 1858 to the present day. All are welcome to attend.
Some of the more unusual accounts include the story of three miners trapped underground for forty-five days during the Christmas season, Tonopah’s “Nevergreen” tree, and Reno’s Santa Pub Crawl with thousands of costumed revelers.

Nevada ‘Talking Books’ collection gives voice to written word
Submitted by editor on Thu, 04/20/2017 - 12:32pmBrett Silver is a voracious reader, and he has been since childhood. He’s also legally blind. “My grandma was a retired school teacher,” he said. “She made sure I got my own kind of library.”
She discovered the Talking Books program at the Nevada State Library and Archives and introduced it to her grandson.
Librarians meet with Nevada lawmakers to petition funding

“We would take our kids to lap sit at the library and leave with 30 books — for each child,” he recalled. “Our home was full of books. There’s no way we could have afforded that without the library. We also participated in musicals at the library. It’s just an integral part of my family.”

Horses gather at the refurbished watering fountain during Nevada Day Parade
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 7:19pmIt didn't take long after the recent refurbishing of the horse trough watering fountain before units from the Carson City, Washoe, Reno, and Sparks law enforcement units stopped by to water the horses during the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. This was a wonderful flashback to the original purpose of the fountains and the rebuild this year.

A good friend and very reliable source told me he saw our newly single governor last week at the Century Summit Sierra theater in south Reno, standing by himself in line to see the movie "It's Complicated."
