First woman to swim the length of Lake Tahoe recalls 1962 adventure

Some people, when they first see Lake Tahoe, think how it'd be nice to boat on top of the glass like water. Others imagine fishing on the lake stocked with big fish, while yet others think about how nice it would be to sit at the quiet and scenic shore and enjoy the sun and the view.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

What Works: Rolling with the cycles of life and business

If you haven’t noticed by now, I love quotes. This weekend, I ran across this one by Walt Whitman. “Every moment of light and dark is a miracle.” It reminds me that life is cyclical and when the low cycles hit, we need to ask ourselves what we can learn from them to move forward.

Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

“We have a fresh start and renewed optimism.” That’s what some are saying, but to me, with the increases in city service fees and the taxes voted in over the past 18 months the actions taken are intriguing and problematic.

8 Bicycle Commuting Safety Tips

Bike to Work Week has started. I hadn’t even left the house Monday morning when I read the news that a bicyclist and a vehicle had collided in town. Thankfully, it sounds like everyone is OK. My last article was a list of bicycle commuting tips. This list expands on that information, but focuses more in the area of safety.

Shane Dwight performs at Carson Station on Saturday, April 19

April 19, 2014 - 8:00pm

Northern Nevada residents will get a rare chance to see Shane Dwight perform at Carson Station Casino, Carson City, Saturday, April 19 at 8 p.m. The concert is free.

In the music industry, there is often a preference to try and quickly define an artist and his music by placing him in one or two genre categories. The problem is a preconceived model doesn't fit someone like Dwight.

Carson City School District Can't Keep Holding Budget Line, Superintendent Says

While the tentative plan for next year’s budget is to keep spending the same, Superintendent Richard Stokes warned that certain expenses can’t go on being ignored.

The Greens’ Peak-Oil Limits-to-Growth Apocalypse That Wasn’t

A few years ago, some experts predicted the world was about to reach a peak in global oil and gas production to be followed soon by marked decline. It would cause “war, famine, pestilence and death” – the biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Another version: “war, starvation, economic recession, possibly even the extinction of homo sapiens.”

School District is Cautious on Spending

The budget plan for next year will likely be to maintain the status quo, Superintendent Richard Stokes told the Carson City School Board during its meeting Tuesday evening.

Carson City Supervisors agree to 1/8th cent sales tax to fund city projects

In an emotionally-charged issue that brought out passionate pleas for and against, Carson City supervisors agreed to a 1/8th-cent sales tax to fund several infrastructure projects.

The final vote was 4 to 1, with Supervisor Jim Shirk dissenting. John McKenna, who was seen as the swing vote, agreed in the end which allowed for a required two-thirds majority.

Proposed 20/20 Group Compromise

Let's ignore the 80/800 group of businesses in Carson City, for the moment, and consider meeting the 20/20 group in a compromise over the sales tax increase to pay for their proposed ten million dollar corridor improvements. Why not have them put up half the money of $5 Million ($250K each) and the city can match their investment for the remaining half? Let's all compromise and meet them halfway. If they are willing to put up their money, where our taxes are to be spent, then let hear it for compromise.

Column: Enjoy the Super Bowl on Sunday, leave the driving to someone sober

It is that time of year again ... the Super Bowl! As with many sports related events we find ourselves celebrating the victory or drowning our sorrows in loss. In either case, if you are going to be partaking in alcoholic beverages, don’t drink and drive.

City Staff and the 1/8 cent Tax Scam

I am adamantly opposed to the 1/8 cent tax increase to fund proposed city projects. I resent the efforts of city staff to “bundle” these projects, falsely represent them as necessary, and, by omission, deceive voters as to the true costs of these efforts. While at the work shop on January 21st, no one could tell me where the tax budget shortfall was for these projects, and there was no clearly demonstrable need.

Taxing Carson City More?

Carson City NV

Yet another proposal to spend money by our city government has been proposed once again to build animal shelters, athletic centers and improve 'corridors'. After the failed city center proposal there seems to be no end to new possibilities for our public officials to spend more taxpayer money. Much like our state and federal governments, increased spending seems to be pandemic. Are these all worthwhile and worthy endeavors?
