Funny mistakes in Nevada Assembly on last day

by NATASHA VITALE

As the last day of the 77th session of the Nevada Legislature was coming to an end Monday and the clock ticked closer to deadline, legislators were becoming more and more burned out, as well as the technology they rely on.

The Assembly floor session became a perfect example of this.

Grace Works: The Church Has Left the Building!

On Sunday, June 2, 350 people will provide services rather than going to service
Event Date:
Repeats every day until Sun Jun 02 2013 .
June 2, 2013 - 9:00am

Introducing Grace Works, or as others have called it “The Church has left the Building!” This is a Sunday when area churches show God’s love through providing services, rather than going to services. It is an event that has been going on in several other communities across the US, involving thousands of people on a given Sunday. The First Presbyterian Church started it here in Carson City two years ago; last year Ministerios Una Puerta Al Camino ( The Church of the Door to the Way) joined them. Over 150 people participated.

Don Q's fishing report for the week of May 30

Putting Up The Flag

I fly the flag every day. The kids even bought a solar powered spot light so we can leave it out at night. I do it in honor for the time, before the renewed Muslim war against the world and before the “patriot” act, when people here and abroad knew that the American flag stood for liberty and liberation from tyranny.

But now…?

Now I look at the stars through teary eyes as each star is morphing into a swastika or a hammer-and-sickle — or is it a crescent moon?

Legislative Money Panels Approve K-12 Spending Plan

by ALEX POMPLIANO

On Friday, the Legislature’s two budget committees approved a public school spending plan that establishes $2.8 billion in general fund support for the next two years.

The plan largely follows Gov. Brian Sandoval’s recommendations budget proposal for K-12 education, which also designates basic state support of about $5,500 per pupil over the next two years — an increase of about $200 over existing funding levels.

Wildlife managers urge campers to be 'bear aware' when headed to Sierra, Lake Tahoe

Headed to Lake Tahoe or the backcountry for the weekend? Well, bears and other critters are headed out into the wild too after spending winter and spring inside their own nooks and crannies. And, like you, they're up for some exploring.

Oh, and they're hungry, too.

Carson City highlights National Public Health Week with trail signs

In recognizing National Public Health Week, officials in Carson City have designed an innovative approach to getting its message out, turning to the use of signs along a local walkway.

Dubbed "Trail to Good Health" several signs will spout up along a mile-long section of the Carson City Freeway multi-use path from Northridge Drive to College Parkway. The signage will be up through the week of April 1-7 and are designed to message users about public health and ways to improve on it, personally and community wide.

Carson High School Uniform Debate

Why am I opposed to school uniforms at Carson High School? It’s a lengthy answer and so I’ll try to condense it. We live in a small town, with limited selection to stores. We have Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenny, and Kohl’s. We have access, in Reno, to those listed plus several more, but only a fraction of the stores that you would have in a big city. My daughter has been in the current SSA “uniforms” at the middle school for the last 2 years. Additionally I have a buying background in the fashion industry for 8 years, so I have that perspective to my argument as well.

Opinion: Department managers need to be at budget hearings

President Reagan once said - "tear down this wall."

This Board needs to say: "remove these curtains."

As they are preventing Department Managers from being present at budget hearings. Establishing a system of transparency is our responsibility, while accomplishing this we cannot exclude the right of the public to participate and collaborate in the budget process. Any level of openness that is interfered with only ensures that the public trust will be damaged.

Orwellian NEW-Speak: Budget Cut Language Engineering

Orwellian NEW-Speak: Budget Cut Language Engineering

Orwellian New-Speak: Budget Cut Lies

Does anyone out there actually believe that Congressional sequestration results in budget cuts? The federal spending under sequestration goes up every year without congress even passing a budget. If the automatic baseline budget grows less than is required by law then Washington, our media, and the New-speak columnists misinform the people of our nation that there has been a cut when in fact spending is increasing. There are no cuts which is why spending goes up each year.

The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank releases research on the effects of federal tax policy changes on Nevada’s high-income households

The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank released the fifth of its High Net Worth briefings today. The research prepared by local market research firm Applied Analysis estimated that recent changes in federal tax policy could cost Nevada’s high net-worth households as much as $1.8 billion annually. Changes analyzed included those sourced to higher marginal and capital gains tax rates, modifications to the alternative minimum tax, the reintroduction of deduction limitations for wealthy families (Pease limitation), new Medicare taxes and a permanent modification to the estate and gift tax.

Opinion: Spending Other People’s Money

When most of us spend our personal funds for a good or service, we strive for maximum value because our funds are finite.

Public spending, whether at the Federal, state or local level, occurs because of borrowed money, taxes and user fees ultimately paid for by an overlapping pool of individuals and businesses.

Carson City wild horse advocates lose battle with BLM; horse trapping underway

The Bureau of Land Management began removing several horses Wednesday from the outskirts of Carson City. The horses are a part of the Pine Nut Mountains herd management area that is adjacent to Deer Run Road. The following is from Margie Quirk, a wild horse advocate, who, along with nearly two dozen residents, were unsuccessful in their attempt to convince the BLM to consider other alternatives than to trapping and moving the 11 wild horses from the area.

'Sequestration' could hurt Nevada; Reno airport might lose midnight shift at control tower

Nevada stands to lose nearly 8,000 jobs and tens of millions in wages and federal aid if Congress fails to stop deep “sequestration” spending cuts from taking effect March 1.

U.S. Educator Report Card: Math F, Science F, Reading D-, Socialism A+

The 2012 education PISA* rankings indicate that the USA came in at 25th for math, 14th for reading and 17th for science out of 30 countries with only three of those countries spending slightly more money per pupil than America. Yet the mantra for more money, benefits and taxes for education continue just as it has for the last sixty years. If more money will solve the education problem then why hasn't it ever worked in the last sixty years?

Nevada governor puts education high on 2013 agenda

CARSON CITY - Gov. Brian Sandoval isn't giving up many details as he finalizes his 2013-15 spending plan ahead of his State of the State address on Wednesday. But Nevada's bleak revenue picture suggests that it will likely be a mostly status quo budget with little in the way of new spending.

Sandoval said last week he continues to tweak his address, which will focus largely on both public K-12 schools and higher education, the two components that make up 55 percent of the current two-year, $6.2 billion budget.

The Hundred Year War On The Economy

Sometimes it takes a while to get the big picture, to see things coming into focus. Now, I am not much for conspiracy theories, but if anything looks like it is being driven by design, this is one. The theories driving it were formulated many lifetimes ago. The people whose sick minds spawned them are long dead. For the life of me I do not understand how any egomaniac could possibly get his jollies from a trend he might have started but maybe not even his great-grandson might see coming to fruition. But there it is, a hundred year timeline on several fronts.

Destruction of money
